Barry Jackson: Miami Dolphins to audition Chad Ochocinco

Which player is he going to stunt the growth of? The Dolphins are likely going to carry six wide receivers this upcoming season. I would say Hartline, Bess, Naanee and Gates(even though some think he is on the bubble) are just about locks to make the roster. That means there are two spots up for grabs. Pruitt has a good chance to make it because of his play on special teams, but the rest have a lot to prove. Cunningham, Matthews, Fuller and Moye are likely destined for the practice squad anyways so I doubt Ochocinco would stunt their growths.

Wallace and Moore are entering their third season and my feeling is if they can't outperform a 34 year old Ochocinco in training camp they probably are never going to make a major impact with the team.

I don't see how having Ochocinco as one of the 12 or 13 wide receivers in camp is going to stunt the growth of younger players. Now, if it comes down to the final roster spot and it is a toss up between Ochocinco and someone like Matthews you definitely go with Matthews. I just can't see how having Ochocinco in training camp is going to hurt the team.

Nubs you just hit the nail on the head!

The more i look at the wr roster of Hartline, Bess, Gates, Nandee, Wallace, and Moore the more i say why the hell not! Despite what many on here believe a system is not going to make talent ! Brian Hartline is not the next Jordie.Nelson, jesus Nelson had double the tds last year that Hartline had in his career and almost double the yards.

Without falling over.

sounds like a perfect fit for a made for tv drama.... i'm sure HBO is begging us to bring him in

Who will he be catching passes from? I wonder what all this audition will entail

Kinda funny timing with the Hard Knocks thing, was he interested in Miami before last week. I hope we get Ocho Cinco and not MUCHO STINKO!

Miami native with experience at one of the weakest spots on the team? Yes, please.

This guy was an absolute ZERO with Tom Brady taking the snaps! Amazing some here think he is worth a shot! Pass

If he struggled to learn New England's playbook, then he's really going to have trouble learning the WCO.

Yep, not only did he struggle with the playbook, but he has the dropsies too, and he will probably only sign a guaranteed contract - so its gonna cost us. I really dont see a signle positive in this at all.

Wideouts usually take years to develop. Very rarely do they contribute immediately, even in todays NFL. Anyone expecting big things from our very late round picks are going to be in for a nasty surprise this season.

We specifically targeted players that fit into our offense. While many WR's take time to transition, our WR picks were scheme picks. They probably know more about the offense than some of our vets do.

I have seen several comments that suggest that we don't lose anything by trying out Ochocinco. I disagree. Even if he is not a huge diva and he contributes what we expect - will he make the team that much better next year?

We have a lot of younger receivers that we need to find out if they will make it or not. Having Ochocinco will slow down that process. It is not like Ochocinco has a history of mentoring younger receivers so we don't get the benefit out of having him other than whatever increase in productivity he brings.

Unless we have given up on a lot of the younger WRs and plan to dump them and use CO as a stop-gap then I really hope we don't go down that road. The best we can hope for is some increase in productivity at the expense of learning about and developing the young group we have.

The worst that could happen is that he will tank and we will lose opportunity to learn about and develop the WRs we have.

I just don't see the upside as worth the risk - especially after his performance last year.

If these "Young Recieves" that you speak of cant beat out a 34 year old WR on the backside of his career, then they're not worth a damn anyway. Chad still got it and has something to prove. IF his head is screwed on right, you get a Vet WR with a chip on his shoulder and has a ton to prove, for a basement cost. Win win to me.
