DOLPHINS NOTES

### Even with three more botched snaps Thursday (involving Nate Garner --- who took all the first team snaps --- and David Arkin), Joe Philbin still insists: “I’m confident we can get it fixed.”

But even beyond the snapping issues and one or two unsettled offensive line positions, the passing game is not where the Dolphins want it.

“We still had a drop or two,” Philbin said. “We still had maybe an accuracy issue here or there. When the plays present themselves to make, we’ve got to do a better job making them on a more consistent basis.”

Brian Hartline put it this way: “You can see it coming along. You can see guys, myself included, playing better, playing faster. [But] we’re nowhere near where we want to be. We’re still working on timing. We’re still working on getting in and out of the huddle faster, getting lined up faster, maintaining our tempo through the heat. That will come with time.”

### The undrafted rookie running backs, Damien Williams and Orleans Darkwa, are both pushing Mike Gillislee, and Williams has been more impressive than Daniel Thomas at times.

“They are both fundamentally sound football players,” Philbin said Thursday. “I thought in the last drill we had, I think we ran an outside zone to the left and they do a good job of ball security. They are not afraid to step up there in pass protection. I like the group. I think it’s a good, young group.”

### Really like how the secondary is coming along. Reshad Jones has had a good camp, Louis Delmas appears to be an upgrade over Chris Clemons, Cortland Finnegan has been solid and Jamar Taylor seems much improved. And Brent Grimes remains one of the team's best players, of course.

Sounds good about the secondary.

what a suprise

I'm not worried about bad snaps.

We can't afford to have Nate Garner as starter. That doesn't qualify as an attempt to win in this league.

The defense has a good chance to be real good. The offense concerns me. If the oline doesn't improve could be another year of disappointment on that side of the ball.

In my opinion, an attempt to win would be making sure your best players are on the field. If Garner turns out to be the best option we have at the center position, then starting anyone else would not qualify as an attempt to win

I think the point is that if Garner is your best option, he shouldn't be, and you should look for outside help. FFS, Miami has already overdrafted a RT in the 1st RD and overspent on Albert at LT all in the name of fixing the line so that Tannehill has everything he needs to succeed. If Garner is your C, continue that train of thought and go sign a veteran C - even if he'll move to the bench when Pouncey returns. Miami, over the course of my lifetime, has been a team of half-measures.

Miami NEEDS Tannehill to make a major leap forward. Their entire off season reflects as much. Biggest FA acquisition = LT; first three draft picks = RT, WR, OG/OT. It's not as if the D couldn't have used some of those resources, and it's not as if Miami didn't pass up better defensive players with those first three picks. But they've established that they're putting all their chips on Tannehll making that leap. To half-ass the replacement of Mike Pouncey screams, 'Well, we hadn't planned on this, so we're not ready to make the necessary adjustments to make it fit within the plan.'

really looking forward to seeing jamar taylor come the preseason...

Is Garner a solution? No. But remember, we are a pass first offense and typically our C combo blocks in pass pro. If he can snap reliably then I think he is the safest short term option.

JuWuan James was a reach, and we failed to trade up for Lewan, so James is our RT. Nothing we can do about it. The only other OL we drafted is a OG with a high ceiling but who I raw and facing a huge jump in competition. Our options are limited ... and if Smith can't reliably snap, Garner looks like the best option for the short term.

I don't like Hickey's offseason, but this OL is more than one player away. Next offseason we need another major overhaul. Sad, but that's where we are at.

I think what your post illustrates is that we need Hickey to make a "major leap forward" with hid personnel decisions. We invested a lot of money and high draft picks in to an OL that is poor at pass protection and worse at run blocking.

He had an entire OL to replace clean slate and everyone's blessing to spend huge cap and draft picks fixing it. If you think he overpaid for Albert and only stumbled 9n to Colledge after Pouncey went down ... then Hickey may not have made a single good move along the OL. That sounds like abject failure for our 7th choice GM.

Yeah....

I don't see Gillislee making the squad this year.

Dumb question, but are there any veteran Cs available who are worth signing? From what I've seen of Satele last year, I think Garner is a much better option.

Well said. I just don't know who is available that would be an upgrade. Maybe the team is looking, but wants to see what they have in camp first. Also, I haven't heard much about the undrafted free agent center. Does that mean he's not an option?
