Barry Jackson: Unfulfilled Promises by Dolphins

Thanks BJ for correctly identifying the stats.

Now whats the problem? How do you fix it?

Anyone can diagnose.

The problem is we are back in shotgun way too much and the defense can just tee off, even when we dominate in run game in first half and do things from under center while using the TE's. Then we go 4 WR spread and shotgun. why? Why must we insist on using the shotgun so much without sticking with what worked?

You cant come up with a flea flicker to start a game?

You cant run 1 or 2 misdirection plays to keep them guessing? Who fuk cares if it takes away half the field as long as the WR is smart enough to come back to the ball? Wallace!

If there was a book written about the Dolphins, it's title would be 'Unfulfilled Promises'.

Here are my random thoughts in regards to this article...

* Articles like this are not written if Miami closes out Buffalo and/or New England
* To be fair the team has improved on their Red Zone Offense and 3rd down conversions
* Comparing the defense stats to last year is "fuzzy math". The team has played much better offenses to this point compared to last year's sled
* The entire LB change out is an interesting one. I loved the play of Burnett and Dansby last year, but this move was made because they were getting on the wrong side of 30 and their contracts were nonsensical numbers to keep around going forward after this year. They went younger and tried to get more athletic. I would not not have made the move, but a move had to made this offseason at the latest. They jumped on it a year early and I understand it.
* Jackson killing the defense for giving up 3 more points from the past is a tad picky. The defense has played a lot of tough offenses and has held its own except for the New Orleans game.

Now, with all that said, my concern with this team is the ability of the coaching staff to develop players and utilize their strengths. I have been critical of Joe Philbin, but have also stated I think he can be a good football coach. However, he is at a crossroads right now. Who is he going to be. He has two primetime games to show who he is as a leader. Joe has escaped criticism for a long time in the media and this site. Now, finally the light is being casted on him.

I had a problem when he was selected that he never had been a head coach, never called plays, never had the challenge of decision making on game day (something that my picks of Brian Billick and Mike McCoy all had fyi). I was also stunned during Hard Knocks when he was nitpicking at the players in the locker room and getting on guys for having their shoes tied. The jettisoning of everyone in the leadership council was not a coincidence either. He has shown no ability...let alone interest...attempting to take talented players like Brandon Marshall and Vonte Davis that need attitudinal guidance and keeping them on the team. I like character guys, but you are limited as a coach if you cannot coach up different personalities.

Joe has made is stamp on this team as much of anyone in the organization. If the season heads south Jeff Ireland will be the fall guy. I can already see Mike Sherman being next in the fans' eyes. How Joe is escaping additional criticism is beyond me. The flat team that came off the bye vs. Buffalo is on Joe. The end of game management vs. Buffalo is on Joe. The fizzling out, mentally weak effort vs. New England is on Joe.

We get it. Tannehill sucks. Loud and clear
Actually you didn't get it. That thread suggested that Tannehill could be used in a way that better suits the kind of ability he showed in college.

Why must we insist on using the shotgun so much without sticking with what worked?

i don't think tannehill is comfortable under center. pure speculation, but i dont know what else to say. it's not like he's got these great numbers/production from the gun and they're terrible when he's under center, so i don't have any other explanation other than rt prefers to be in the gun.

Why are we not talking MORE about the fact that things Joe Philbin stresses the team does not do? Things such as getting off to a fast start (finally did that Sunday only took 7 games) and winning the turnover differential just do not happen.

Plus, I do not think Joe gives the team an intellectual advantage of the teams they play. That bothers me.

look at that end zone presnap alignment view and the way the blocking went after the snap on the tannehill backside pressure and fumble and tell me thats not a blown assignment by mckinnie...mckinnie immediately floats inside to help cog when he doesn't need to and lets the edge blitzer get to tannehill...you don't dial up a vertical deep ball like we now know was the call and allow a clean edge blitzer off the edge...

it's got to be on mckinnie

as for the lack of deep balls hard to throw deep when you have no running game or pass pro like we did the first 6 games to allow for the plays to develop...we are using mike wallace like a possession wr right now...running possession routes...if sherman doesn't trust the protection he's not gonna dial up plays that take a lot of time to develop

hopefully with mckinnie at left and martin at right we will see more threatening the field routes

by the way the main cuprit for your gash run plays to my eye is philip wheeler...i don't see how it's gonna change...ellerbe misses some things also but wheeler is the ones that's trailing the ball by a yard every time the back gets into the 2nd level or doesn't fill timely..comes down to zero instincts a lack of strength at the poa and a guy that can't get off blocks worth a hoot...he doesn't make plays even when he's clean...

That's what happens when your gm sucks so bad, you have to trade for a player, and give him one week to prepare to start. I am surprised McKinney played as well as he did. Phillibin has been a major disappointment. It's time he starts taking some heat for this teams preparation, and game day play.

i cant tell you how man times a game i am literally yelling at the tv "where are the lbs...get up there and fill"

has to be at least 5 times...this week our dline shifts over recognizing the run to that side presnap we have a numbers advantage they run right into what we want them to and i'm screaming why isn't a lb shooting the gap on this who's clean and making a tackle for loss...then i see it's run at wheeler who is clean and he's so late and it's an 8 yard gain...

drives me crazy...makes me want to break ****
