Thanks to the two of the greatest inventions in human history  NFL Replay on NFL Network and Tivo  I was able to record two games, both played on Nov. 12, that peaked my interest for obvious Dolphins-related reasons.
The first was the San Diego Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals (Chargers won 49-41) and the second was the New Orleans Saints at Pittsburgh Steelers (Steelers prevailed 38-31).
I finally got around to watching them, which I wanted to do in order to get a feel for Cam Cameron’s offense, and to see what the Dolphins were getting in linebacker Joey Porter. I didn’t chart each play, but here’s what stood out:

Talks a lot about A LOT of fin moves...

I think Lorenzo Booker is going to be a much larger fixture in this offense than I originally thought. The runs and screens Cameron loves to do out of the shotgun are almost tailor-made for Booker. I’m now starting to see the wisdom in that pick. In a lot of offenses, Booker wouldn’t be able to do much. In Cameron’s, he could be a pinch-hit star. I’ll really be watching this in training camp;
I also now better understand why the Dolphins felt the urge to move L.J. Shelton from RG, where he was fared very well last season, to RT. Cameron loves to run little counters with the RT pulling into the middle of the line. Shelton, despite his pass-blocking limitations, has great feet and showed a tremendous ability last year to run block, especially when he got a running start;

Check it out!

The blocking limitations that Dolphins TE David Martin has won’t matter in this offense. The fullback takes care of those duties. That will allow Martin to do what he does best: get down the field and catch the ball. Also should help him stay healthy. So signing Martin is another move that now makes more sense to me;

Seems like he's understanding the Mcmike move now...

Anyone else think it was an uneccesarily long rant to go on about our 6th round pick? I understand his point but I view the 6th and 7th rounds as rounds you go out and make sure you get who you want. It isn't the first round - there isn't an obvious ranking of talents for these guys. Using a 6th on a STARTING fullback seems like good use to me.

I think he's more about the fact that there is a real chance had we not picked him Reagan might have gone undrafted. Therefore it might have been better had we used a later 7th rounder on him. But who knows? A 6th rounder is still a 6th rounder, and if he becomes a starting FB then that is great value for the pick.

I think it might be a little hateorade for all the Press Reagan is getting for his youtube stunt and nickname... and of course a 270 FB is going to have a tough time impressing when the pads are off...JMO.

Wait till the pads come on and see if he blows people up.

Didn't know about Joey's hamstring, maybe that's why he had a lackluster season sorta.

we all know Ronnie Brown isn't LT. A combine 40 yard time is not juking and making cuts on the field. We have Booker for that.

Great article though, I enjoyed it.

This is the type of stuff we should listen to/watch rather then ESPN and all those people. Bedard takes the time to break down stuff for the fans while ESPN plays the popular vote.

Not all the local media for the Dolphins are likable (LeBetard) but at least we have guys like Bedard who put the effort in to make their articles worth reading.

My question is this.

Is the offense built to take advantage of LT or is the offense built for a runningback like LT?

One one side if Cameron is able to make an offense that can take advantage of the strengths of RB then good chance RB will have a good season.

However if the offense is made to NEED a runningback like LT, then it isn't looking great for RB.

I think you have a base offense and slightly adapt to your personnel. You don't have a set offense then throw the book out when you get new personnel.

In SD he utilized LT and AG because they were his best players (his wr's sucked). Here notice he didn't go balls out looking for a stud tight end, but he focused on the WR position with Ginn, trying to trade Marty Booker and lighting a fire under Chambers' butt.

Instead of LT he'll have a bruiser in Brown and a quick back in Lorenzo.

I don't think Ronnie Brown has the athleticism that LT does. However, I don't think getting through those holes would be an issue of Ronnie Brown dropped to 220, rather than playing at 230. Those counters are the bread and butter of the running game and if we can't really use those, that could be an issue with the running game.

Some coaches are better at adjusting to their personel and some are better at making schemes that work and finding players to play those schemes.

The blog wrote it like Cameron is a coach that builds a system and then finds players.
