The C Gates effect forces the defense to play a little back and to move back a little quicker. So far he has already shown he can get open long even if the passes are not hitting yet. This is already opening up things underneath for the other WRs/TEs.

The P Livas effect forces the punter to either kick off out of bounds or kick short afraid of the chance that P Livas will run a punt back.

i love clyde gates and hope we keep livas for a retuner and just send merling and send marlon moore for a draft pick, so livas can take his roster spot. i think we are going with 6 recivers

It's too early to attribute anything for Livas. His return last week didn't guarantee him anything except a chance to make more returns in preseason.

Wait to you see the replay on the NFL channel. The Panthers were very careful with their punts. Sure it is early, but the threat is there.

That is a new idea on offense for us. We now have threats. C Gates and R Bush really opened up our offense already because of their speed. We now have the players to score on any down from anywhere on the field.

P. Livas will do the same on punt returns. Field position is so important and I can see our improved Special teams giving us a 5-10 yard bump per change of possession.

Yea i did hear the announcers say Gates speed was clearing out the underneath routes for the Posession WRs and TEs

I watched the game, but I'm still very unsold about him making the final roster until he shows that he can do good things consistently, which he really has to do because he brings no skills to the team other than that.

Livas might not make this team though. He better make aanother impact play in the next 2 games or else he is cut. They won't give him a roster spot based on 1 punt return

I agree completely. Returners have to hit the long returns a few times in the preseason or they are out. I don't recall seeing the offense working him in, but that is not a good sign that he hasn't caught a few balls. I liked what I saw from Carroll last year on KRs and if they are considered somewhat equal then I think you let Reggie return punts and have Carroll return the kicks and free up the roster spot. Reggie by the way will not going down by the first tackle this year on a PR. I am completely amazed by the strength he has shown.

Using R Bush on punt returns is a waste of talent. As a number of reporters have shown, D Bess has a better average returning punts then R Bush does.

P Livas was also a RB and WR in college not just a return guy. He also ran the ball as well as caught passes. I think he can work into being the 6th WR. He gives us 6 WRs with R Wallace. And a 2nd speed WR with Gates.

And let's not forget the C Gates effect. So far he has been getting open long and our QBs simply have not connected yet. When our QB hits him for a 63 yard TD pass the defense will drop back another couple of yards.

We are now doing something that we have not did since Scott Linehan had Gus Frerotte throw long to Chris Chambers at least twice a game. Frerotte admitted after that season that Linehan would have him just throw long to Chambers just to stretch the field.

The difference being that C Gates is much faster then Chris Chambers was. Chris Chambers was rarely open, C Gates is often getting wide open. The defense is opening up for underneath pass routes. Gates and Livas give us two very fast WRs plus both can do reverses etc. And from watching the film of P Livas in college, he will be better at running the ball then Gates will.

This will open up more room for R Bush to get open and break plays.

Speed kills, and we now have speed to kill with.

Gates outdid Livas last night as far as return average on Punts/Kickoffs. So if we have to get rid of Livas I don't think it will be some huge deal.

I think it would be a big plus is P Livas could become a good return guy for us.

Gates and Bush could do what they did best and we would still have a "Ted Ginn" effect on punt returns with a better football player then Ted Ginn is in P Livas.

In a perfect world you want your 6th WR or 5th running back returning punts and kick offs.

I'm watching the game again, there were a couple of thing I was wondering about and to be honest, had not really really watched the 2nd half.

A couple of things I feel are important.

Rookie WR C Gates is playing almost every down of offense. Starters are Gates, Marshall and Bess in the slot. Hartline is coming in and taking either Marshall or Gate's place when needed (thus his few catches). Watch the game again and Gates is amost always the left WR and Marshall the right while Hartline plays both sides.

I just another really poor Chad Henne pass that IMO was for C Gates who was open. 7:48 left in the 2nd Qtr, and the ball comes out of his hand wrong and goes between a streaking Gates and C Clay coming out of the backfield. It landed between Gates and Clay so not one could decide who it was going to.

Just watch the games and look at the WRs before the snap. The next play after, 2nd and 15th, Gates top left, Bess in slot, Hartline bottom right. Gates run a streak and Bess catches a 17 yard pass running underneath

Play by play guys showed how the FS was way back double covering deep on Gates allowing Bess to run free.

Next play at 7:02 left. Gates again far outside left. This is the route where he blows past the pressing corner and then by the stunned safety. But Chad Henne overthrows him. He would have caught the ball on the 20 yard line running for a TD.

They give gates a break and bring in Moore to the right side, Hartline on the left and again Bess is in the slot.

Bess catches another 17 yard pass on our 1st 5 wide. However, this play started out as a 3 wide and Fasano and RB D Thomas split out.

Gates is still playing almost every rep. He is going to be our #2 WR. He played more snaps then any other WR on our team.

One other things. Having Gates and Livas as return guy is making us yards. Watch all the punts, the Panthers are kicking short and kicking out of bounds or as close to the line as possible. At the start of the second half 13:40 left in the 3tr, Nat Moore mentions how the Panthers are being careful punting because of Livas and Gates and the Panthers then get a "15 yard out of bounds hit penalty" on the play hitting C Gates late on his punt return. E Brown, #91 was the 4th Panther to hit Gates on that play.

Id be surprised if Livas makes the roster...hes gonna end up on the practice squad.
