I have a question. Would not Culpepper get more money from his new team if he was traded? I mean, by being traded, he goes with the same contract, and his team would renegociate it. By being released, the team would offer him a new contract, but it is more likely now that a restructured contract will pay him more than a new contract. Especially, if he is not signed to be the starting QB. How about bonuses? Does not he get more money in guaranteed money and bonuses as a traded player? Please correct me if wrong. Did not know if I should post this here or in the Salary Cap forum. Move if necessary. Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's a wash either way. When they restructure a contract it is basically writing up a new contract. At least thats how I understand it.

Maybe you'll get "moved"....But it's a good question, what's the cap hit in both situations?

I'm not sure either, but I'm sure a new contract is better because of the new "signing bonus" he would receive . . . which means more guaranteed money . . . I could be worng but I'm pretty sure that is the case.

If it is a wash in both ways, I do not get why he wants to be released, which will make things drag, instead of being traded, which could have happened already. Maybe, he will be more in charge of his own destiny. Perhaps, the only thing he wants is to make sure the Dolphins get nothing for him. He has always struck me as a classy act, so I dont think so.
Cap wise. I think the hit is less if we trade him because he goes with his contract. If we release him, I wonder if we have to pay him something.

I think you are basically right. If he is traded, he is subject to the parameters of his present contract. Even if he restructures. As a free agent, he could receive a signing bonus that could offset any monetary loses of a restructured contract.

IMO, I think Daunte should sit out this season and try to come back next year. But as a competitor, I'm not sure he'll be willing to do that.

He's cleared for practice . . . so I would think Miami is off the hook for an injury settlement, and if we cut him . . . we owe him NOTHING. However we would owe a salary cap hit/penalty . . . which I think is spread out over 2 years now . . . being after June 1st.

If we trade him, I would assume the hit is less or maybe no hit at all . . .but that is a guess.

I think he feels "slighted" by the whole affair! He never did well at being quiet!

Trading or releasing counts the same against the cap.

All the remaining future unamortized bonus money ($4.2M) will count against the 2008 cap. (There is no spread over 2 years).

So the only way would be trading w/o Pep's contract being restructured . . . and we know that wont happen lol.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, Kdawg, but we have the $4.2M hit in 2008 no matter how Culpepper leaves the team.

damn, that sucks . . . I really wouldn't mind us just releasing him now . . . all this attention for hopes of us getting at most a 6th rounder (I don't see a team giving up more than that) . . . wouldn't the compensatory pick be greater anyways . . . i don't know . . . I was thinking a trade would lower the hit, its all pretty confusing what the FO is trying to accomplish . . . starting fresh would have been ideal IMO w/ Green now here.
