DIEHARD DOLPHIN
With so many starters on defense expected to miss the Bengals game and so many young backups slated to start, we have an opportunity here as Dolphin fans to do an assesment of our coaches.
Because when a team loses it's starters, the way the Eagles did 2 years ago and the Patriots did early last year, what wins the game is game planning on both sides of the ball.
Every NFL team will tell you that their "Scheme" if properly executed will lead to victory. But the trick is to call the right plays, at the right time and to best utilize the players you do have out there.
For example, do you think the COLTS will EVER let Willie McGuinnest go un-blocked again after the Pats blitzed him on two consecutive goal line situations?
I don't think so.
So yeah, Carson Palmer and his recievers look like the real deal to me, especially if we throw them red meat and line up Madison, Poole, Edwards and Wyrick. But there is a way, through game planning, to eliminate the long ball plays and MAKE Palmer make every throw and the recievers every catch. I believe that we have to play a 2 deep zone on at least 65% of our snaps and force the ball to the underneath and flat routes wher hopefully our linebackers can make a play.
If we try to pressure this QB too much and man up on the outside and middle we're going to get burned by a young QB who is definitely the real deal. If we had all of our starters in there and you could match up Surtain with Chad Johnson I'd say blitz the bastard, but Johnson against promising but untested rookie Poole? Play zone.
The "X" factor this week is our offense. The Bengals gave up a lot of rushing yards to Paul Hackett's mis-direction plays because that young deense over ran a bunch of plays. The Dolphins usually run trap plays and straight on plays so... I don't see the Dolphins ripping off any big runs in this one unless they try and copy some of the Jets' successful plays.
Also, we cannot allow the Bengals' problem stopping the run last week to DOMINATE our play calling this week. The Jets RARELY ran on first down and ripped off big runs on THIRD DOWNS when the Bengals were poised for a pass. WE MUST CONTINUE TO THROW ON FIRST DOWN in order to keep the pressure up on their safeties. If they come up on every first down, we have to make them pay with down field passing. It's the only way. Oh, and the next time we have a third and 20, could we PLEASE not call a screen, AGAIN? No one is fooled, ever.
Well, that's it. We can judge our coaches this week. With so many players out, only a great game plan will give us a victory. Let's see what Wanny and Foerter and the rest of the coaches have up their sleeves.
GO PHINS!!
