[font=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica]Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith is losing patience with the contract holdout of first-round draft pick Cedric Benson.

"We're trying to get our football team ready," Smith said after the team's practice Sunday. "A player we had pegged to be a big part of it isn't here.

"There's no way for me to sugarcoat it any more. He needs to get into camp. Hopefully that will get done soon."

Benson was the fourth pick in the April draft. The running back has held out longer than any Bears draft pick since wide receiver David Terrell in 2001.

Before Sunday, Smith hadn't appeared overly concerned about Benson's absence because the team reported for training camp a week earlier than most teams. Smith still hasn't ruled out Benson's participation in the preseason opener in the Hall of Fame game against the Miami Dolphins if he can get signed and into camp soon.

"We're definitely to the point of, 'Hey, Cedric, we need you in camp now,'" Smith said.

The Bears made Benson's agent Eugene Parker a contract offer on July 22, but the sides have not talked since then

The Dolphins arent as concerned as the Bears b/c, they have several other backs taking the handoffs. The Bears have no one else. Benson will be their whole offense.

This just goes to show you how things have changed here with the new regime. In the past, things like this would leak to the public or they'd be discussed publicly. Negotiations should not be held in the media. I'm frustrated as hell that Ronnie isnt in camp yet. But Saban and Co. are handling it the right way. He'll be in camp soon and believe, if it were up to Ronnie, he'd be in camp. What good would it do for Saban to come out and rip him? Nada. He alread took a little jab at him by referring to him as the "other guy". That's the right approach IMO.

Well right now the 1st rounders are started to take place in signing. So hopefully within the next few days, we can get Brown into camp.

Man Ronnie is ticken me off too man, if he aint signed by like wednesday Im going on a rampage. I mean I understand its business but damn, the dudes young, it aint like he proved himself in the NFL yet, and plus hes gonna get money regaurdless so wtf, why not practice and do everything while his contract is in the process. DAMN YOU RONNIE!!!! Im almost starting to like Ricky more.

Get into camp Ronnie.

How are we going to have an OROY if you aren't getting ready. Gordon is a good back, Morris can hold his own, not to mention RW after four games. I would be in camp learning now, or after ther first four games your rookie mistakes from not knowing will have you on the bench. Get into camp!

the players shouldn't be ripped for wanting to get paid. If it were basketball or baseball i'd be pissed off because everything's guaranteed but in footbal only the bonus is guaranteed. Just cause they sign you in football it doesn't mean you'll see even haf of whats on the contract.

Everyone seriously needs to chill. Brown will sign when he signs, nothing we do or say can affect that.

Plus, when he does sign, he won't be in football shape, and will most likely tweak a hamstring or an ankle or something, and miss some time. That's just how it works.

He'll sign, and he'll work into the offense as the season goes on. I have a feeling he'll be a force to be reckoned with for years, but not on day one.

Relax, have a good beer. Enjoy the fine camp reports on the players who are there from our terrific camp reporters here at FH.

Saban's on the job, we'll be just fine.

exactly

I'm a little dissappointed in both. They both seemed so soft spoken and anxious to get into camp. Especially Benson, when he was tearing up on stage. I understand its a business but it is getting a little ridiculous how much people are given before they even set foot on a pro football field. More of these high draft picks fail than actually make an impact.
Not to bring Ricky into this and lets forget all the reason behind his leaving; how is it that a proven running back with superstar talent and ability, proven in the nfl can be given a vet min but a new draft pick who has potential out the ying yang but never has played a down of pro ball can be given 22mil?

Just a little silly. Like I said, I lookj foward to him being here and its a business; just a little dissapointing. Caddy was at Bucs camp the morning of first camp before his contract was completed cause he wanted to be there to be with the team and absorbing the playbook.

i hate che and castro. Don't know why people like Jay-Z where his shirts. It just pisses me off

I totally agree. All negotiation should be done behind closed doors. Negotiations in the media, I believe, only creates a more negative atmosphere and negativity towards the organization and/or the player. I think Saban and the front office are creating a very good precedence. I really hope that Ronnie is signed soon though.
