Will almost certainly get the franchise tag from what I'm hearing.

Boomer, have you heard what direction we are leaning with the first pick? I keep hearing Chris Long. Also what chance do you make of the rumored trade with Dallas for their 2 1sts?

Chitown paper says unlikely-

"A year after partnering up with agent Drew Rosenhaus for a dance with the franchise tag, the Bears are expected to sit out that song this offseason.

The deadline to designate a player with the franchise or transition tag is 3 p.m. today, meaning wide receiver Bernard Berrian likely will take another step closer to unrestricted free agency."

Direct from the Combine:

"While the decision to place the franchise tag on Chicago Bears WR Bernard Berrian isn't due until later today, it's likely Chicago will use the marker on him.

In the midst of speaking to the media on Thursday morning, head coach Lovie Smith Smith made it clear the team wants to keep their best receiver.

"We'll try to do whatever we can to keep him," the head coach said.

With a robust $30 million or so in cap space and few options at the receiver position projected to be available in free agency, the team may have no choice but to keep Berrian under the franchise tender of $7.848 million for 2008.

If Chicago decides against using their franchise tag on Berrian, they'll have until next Friday to reach a long-term deal with him or he'll be a free agent. The problem is there's a tremendous risk involved if they don't sew him up for at least one more season and the only other free agent Chicago has that would cost them any thing close to significant money is WLB Lance Briggs. So money shouldn't be an issue in retaining Berrian."

Dallas trade WILL NOT HAPPEN.

Chris Long is probably 1 at the moment, with Dorsey 1a. Gholston and Jake Long remaining in the mix.

I couldn't agree more. That would be a very questionable decision by the Bears. His production simply doesn't merit it.
exaclty. he's a good receiver but not reggie wayne or anything. the franchise tag pays the average salaries of the top 5 players at that position. bernard berrian couldnt sniff those top 5.

Bears | Team unlikely to tag Berrian

The Associated Press reports the Chicago Bears are unlikely to place the franchise tag on unrestricted free-agent WR Bernard Berrian. The franchise tag for a wide receiver is $7.848 million.

Now whom do you believe...seems they can't make up their minds...or ours either.

Dont care, really dont want to go after Berrian in FA. Had some issues with the dropsies last year (do we REALLY need another one of those?) and fills more of the same roll that Ginn will fill for us (deep threat burner), rather than the big possession reciever/redzone target guy we could use.

The Dallas trade defiantly won't happen. McFadden's stock could fall a little and they Cowboys will not need to trade for #1 overall to get McFadden.

Chris Long or Glenn dorsey will be the pick with Jake Long and Matt Ryan remaining in the mix.

While I think it would be hard to believe they would want to pay him the price the franchise tag would give him, I also would have to believe they are very nervous about losing both of their starting WR's in a matter of a couple of weeks and have to either promote their current WR's or find some new ones. If they don't feel they are close to a contract with him (as they would have about a week to get one done), they'll do it just to lock him up for 08. Hey, I hope they don't because I think he'd be a nice addition, but I'd be shocked if they let him hit the f/a market.

LOL. Seems like they were set to tag him up until late morning, but as they still have a week, apparently they've had a strong indication that Berrian will sign before FA starts.
