He will have to be able to contribute on special teams. I feel he is too slow to contribute which will greatly decrease his chances of making the team. College production isn't always the best indicator of NFL success. I think the NFL is too fast for him. I know some people use the Jerry Rice argument. Seriouly, there was only one Jerry Rice!

He is easily the most impressive of our rookie WR class, which isn't saying a whole lot but his experience and the fit are such that he could end up beating out Greg Camarillo and Tab Perry. Neither of those guys is the quick slot receiver that Davone Bess was at Hawaii.

Everyone says he'll have to be a STs guy but the truth of the matter is, guess what, Ted Ginn still alive and kicking, still one of the best return men in all of football (on both punts and kicks). On top of that they're trying Jalen Parmele on returns, this kid Will Billingsley that ran a 4.33 on wet grass and is already looking good enough to vie for a roster spot in the secondary and he's also being tried on returns. Overall, if you're so dead set on taking one of the best return men in football away from his return duties, you've got a myriad of options NOT named Tab Perry.

Bess could easily make the team. Not sure I see the point in standing on the soap box just to give some short little note saying he won't make the team.

Bess might not be real fast but he is quick which is something you look for in a slot WR....He knows how to get open and has great hands....we got a lot of good special teams players during free agency so our special teams should be a lot better this coming season.....we're looking for a slot reciver now and Bess does have a chance to do that for us.

Ozzy rules!!

How's it any different than saying he will? IMO the excitement about him is way too premature. I gave my reasons why he won't make it. It wasn't an empty statment but thanks for playing!

You guys have not seen much of Bess, have you? I unlike most of you that are just yapping saw this kid play alot last year, alot. I use to stay up late to watch Hawaii games, and the guy is amazing. The only player I can compare him to is Welker. He has solid hands and can run some of the best routes you have seen. What he does after the catch is a thing of beauty. I wanted us to draft him and tought we would take him with our 7th pick. Miami needs a good slot reciever and that is what Bess is all about. He will also relieve Ginn of PR and KR duties. Bess will make this team.

Colt Brennan looked good too, but........! I watched him play alot too. They had many TV games he looked good at Hawii, it may be warm in Miami but it ain't Hawii!

He's probably a practice squad guy!

IMO he can make this team as well as about 30% of the NFL teams.

Dont try to hide him on the PS he will get signed by another team, specially if INJ start happening

I think he has an outstanding chance to make this team. Yeah he did have a very disappointing 40 time, but before the 40 was ran this guy was considered a 3rd rounder prospect. He is very quick in and out of his breaks and has extraordinary athletic ability. I do think he will make the team and see playing time. I could be wrong though.

It is funny the same criticisms of Bess are the ones that some of you made about Welker, too small, too slow; when it comes down to it both are hard working football players that QB's love to have.

Yeah, but the funny thing about those two criticisms put together in tandem is, for every Wes Welker that beats them, there are a hundred guys that could not.

Bess will never be anything special. But, he could make this team. Think of him as like a Dedric Ward. Or a Troy Brown, past his prime.

are you talking about wes welker? or lorenzo booker? i know i know if we can replace wes and get 2 picks it was a great deal but here we are 2 yrs later still trying to find a replacement for wes. i have to agree though between him and billingsley(sp) we should have a fun camp to watch.

I agree with that! I hope he makes the team and can contribute. I just think it's kind of silly to put expanded expectations on an UDFA.

He's worthy of expectations higher than your typical UDFA. His production level in Hawaii was ridiculous for a UDFA, and for all the talk about his 4.6 in the Combine 40, his 1.53 in the 10 yard split makes him pretty compelling. He fell out of the draft because when you watch him you see a lot of production but you don't easily find reasons why he could be a special player at the next level. Most guys have to have something, a base from which to work off in terms of what their strength is. If you're an extremely quick guy, that's what you are and that's why you could be special. If you're an extremely tall and physical guy then that's why you could be special. If you have ridiculous ball concentration that's why you could be special. If you can run a 4.3 then that's why you could be special. Davone Bess is a good all-around guy but he's not super duper quick, doesn't have the best hands, doesn't run a 4.3, is short...the best he has going for him is his reliability and consistency which I think makes him just good enough to be a viable receiver in the NFL when you're employing 3-, 4- and 5-WR packages...with an accurate QB, of course.

I just don't see us running those packages with enough regularity to concede him a roster spot! Like I said I'm all for ANY player that makes us a better team. I'm just not getting excited about him just yet!
