The talk about hiring Scott Pioli is as realistic as trading our 1st round (#9) and 4th round picks for the #1 choice to get a QB in the upcoming draft. It isn't going to happen. Pioli is a New England guy; a Belichick guy and a Kraft guy. And, Kraft will do whatever it takes to keep the Dolphins from talking to Pioli. It is a "pipe dream." You might as well bank on solving your financial problems by starting with, "first, I'll win the lottery, then ..."

The reality is, the Dolphins have a GM (by title only right now) in Randy Meuller who was once named "NFL Executive of the Year." Huizenga can name him as the "real GM," and then go after one of the solid NFL assistants out there. Meuller is a good guy who is also a very solid talent evaluator.

I broached the name of Ron Rivera yesterday (prior to, btw, he was put forward by anyone on ESPN) - largely b/c it's a no brainer. He's a young guy, a former player (LB- Bears), who has a good pedigree and has been a very good assistant and defensive coordinator. However, we already have a very good DC in Capers who did a solid job with this defense.

I do think Cam Cameron should be at the top of the list. He did a fine job with two QB's and while San Diego has great talent, Cameron has done a fine job with the Chargers offensive system. If he demonstrates the leadership skills in the interview process - go for it. Cameron could really help Daunte Culpepper.

Regardless, I think they should really try to interview those guys this week. They have a couple of days left as a window. Huizenga would do well to talk with Meuller and get him on board before he leaves. At the same time, go after several assistants.

the problem with thinking of only an offensive minded coach is you have to consider dom capers as leaving if he doesn't get the head coaching job... same for mularkey... these are former head coaches who will be looked over and then will have to take orders from a new young coordinator who comes in as their boss? wont happen... i figure they will both be gone, so although i want an offensive minded coach also, i wont be mad with whoever as long as they are a quality head coach and get quality coordinators under them...

I don't know that a new coach automatically means you lose Dom Capers. If you hire an offensive guy it means Capers has more autonomy. I think that's the ideal scenario. I wouldn't mind our new HC learning defense from the group of guys we have there now.

Losing Mularky would be the best thing about Saban leaving. Whoever the new guy is, he'll know that you don't call for a 3 yard pass on 3rd and 6.

If Capers leaves then Quinn should be promoted to the DC position.

I think Rivera is pointless in coming here bc if that were the case, we mind as well save time and just promote within - Capers. He knows our defense. I like Cameron but he is also being interviewed for the HC in Arizona. If I was an offensive minded coach and I had to choose between HC job in Arizona and Miami, where would I go.. Its a no brainer the guy has an insane amount of talent already lined up in AZ with a young QB, 2 of the best Wrs in the NFL, another on the rise. a decent TE, and a premier back. The only thing theyre lacking is an Oline which they can get thru the draft. Plus AZ is a lot closer to San Diego than Miami is if the guy likes it out there on the West Coast. His only real reason for coming here over AZ would be that maybe he would get more money here and/or he would have a MUCH better defense here than in AZ.

Or he could come here with an already established defense and build the offense(his forte), so that he has a contender not just a high octance offense, which we all know does not win superbowls or even playoff games ( see Indy).

My sediments exactly, An offensive minded coach is needed for our team to get over the hump. An speaking of the two OC that have been talked about Cameron and Pitts OC (Whitsenaut-SPCK), they both use an aggressive play calling that focus on the Running Bacl (RB) utilize the TE (McMicheal), and are not afraid to through the deep ball (Chambers, Hagan, draft pick). Our next coach needs to be well rounded and know that if he isnt good at something get someone that is good at it (ex. Linehan). Murlakey didn't work b/c our offense and our oline wasn't built for run first offense, but it should be and we showed sign of what team we can become (the old dolphins with a mix of '72/'84 w/a killer defense). I know it will take some time but the new coach must come in and make a statement about what type of team we are going to be and make that be the focal point, (w/ R & R(hopefully) express) we should be a run it down ur throat team.

Thats my team 2 cents

Hell no with Cam. I was happy the day he quit IU (was going to be fired anyway). His bs set Indiana football back 10 years.

Finally, a first-hand account.

IF he makes that decision we're better off without him then, if he is only going to focus on the offense. He will choose Miami if he's smart, since he'll work his magic on offense while deferring an already good defense to a good DC.

How about Rex Ryan? I know he is a DC but? I haven't seen his name mentioned.
A dark-horse candidate is Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, whose selection would make a ton of sense. The last three defensive coordinators in Baltimore -- Jack Del Rio, Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan -- have gone on to successful NFL coaching careers, and these Ravens say that Ryan might be the most impressive defensive coordinator they've had.

Dom Capers will become the DC and have full control of it if MIA signs an "offensive" coach to be HC. Huizenga needs to just say to Capers that "we will give you full control of our "defense"...but we want to hire an "offensive" genius to be HC. We will promote Hudson Houck to manage the OC spot."

Dont see why Capers would have a problem with that....especially since he knows that our main problem this year was OFFENSE...

The problem is that Capers then says to Wayne, "No problem -- you give me the job and I'll get you the finest OC out there."

Capers will be head coach or coaching elsewhere. The new HC isn't going to like Wayne dictating to him who he has to use as a DC, and Dom isn't going to like hearing he's not the choice but is just high enough quality to stick around and work for the new guy.

I agree with this. I think Capers is going to be the guy. I don't like it. But I think its going to happen.
