Bettis to miss two weeks with calf injury

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without running back Jerome Bettis for at least the next two weeks due to a right calf injury he suffered in Friday's preseason loss to the Washington Redskins.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Bettis underwent an MRI on the calf on Saturday. However, the results were inconclusive because there was too much blood in the calf. He could have another MRI later in the week, but is not expected to be ready for the September 11 regular season opener against Tennessee.

With Duce Staley already sidelined with a knee injury, Pittsburgh head coach Bill Cowher will now hand the starting reins to second-year pro Willie Parker, who has notched runs of 50 yards or longer in each of his first two preseason tilts.

The 33-year-old Bettis enjoyed a solid 2004 campaign for the Steelers, recording 941 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns on 250 carries. The "Bus" filled in admirably for an injured Staley and helped Pittsburgh to a berth in the AFC Championship Game.

Bettis, a former Notre Dame standout, has played 12 strong years in the NFL since the Rams selected him with the 10th overall selection in the 1993 draft. The bruising back is fifth in NFL history with 13,294 rushing yards and has 82 rushing TDs on 3,369 touches in his career.

A native of Detroit, Michigan and a six-time Pro-Bowl selection, Bettis was contemplating retirement after he fell one game short of the Super Bowl for the third time with the Steelers. Bettis gained at least 100 yards rushing in each of his six regular- season starts last season and ranks second in Steelers history with 10,969 total yards of offense.
