How valuable is a good NFL coaching staff? And how quickly do you know if you have one?

The questions are relevant because the Miami Dolphins open their 2019 training camp with a practice on Thursday. That’s when everyone will begin to understand whether the coaching change owner Stephen Ross made in February was the right thing or not.

“The expectation for us is to improve in a multitude of areas on a day-to-day basis from execution, to playing disciplined football to our fundamentals, to our technique, to being ourselves,” Flores said. “We need to improve on those on a day-to-day basis. That’s my expectation. Improve today. Improve tomorrow. Then we’ll build on that and build some consistency and whatever happens after that, I’ll be happy with.”

Fundamentals are a lot more important than scheme and we haven’t had that in a long time. I hope it will change with this coaching staff.

I would agree, in the sense that "fundamentals" are the foundation upon which everything else is built, but winning doesn't happen without good schemes that are implemented within the players' abilities, and adaptability implemented via gameplanning to exploit opponents' weaknesses.

I am not saying you don't need a solid scheme, I am just saying that fundamentals are more important than that. The best scheme in the world does not help you when your players can't block or tackle. And that's we had with Gase.

Gase won 7 last year. Those who think coaching doesn't matter obviously think Miami would have won 7 with Philbin and 7 with BB. I don't.

But, did the Dolphins upgrade? No one knows. I've said a few times I'm guardedly optimistic. Small things. Getting players to know and complete assignments. Reducing pre-snap penalties. Conditioning. Simple stuff. Flores seems to be addressing these and more. Will that translate into a better team? Again, no one knows.

Unfortunately yes. Until Flores proves otherwise he's a pretty big unknown.
I'll agree that Flores is an unknown at this point, but there is no doubt in my mind that he will be better than Gase, and his clown show, as it pertains to several issues that I had found troubling.

First, even though these guys are first timers at their position, there is almost no chance that, defensively, we are worse in terms of preparations and game planning. One of the many problems I had with Gase as a HC, was that he was totally uninvolved in that side of the ball, and didn't take ownership if its failings. A HC needs to be the leader of a team, not just one facet.

I also think we can safely assume that Flores is a no nonsense sort of guy. One that will deal with things like senseless penalties, players not knowing their assignments, or freelancing within the design of the scheme.

Im optimistic too, but I've been down this road too many times before. This site (myself included) has been just as high on all the past failures at head coach too. Im officially in wait and see mode with this team.

I think everyone is a little gun shy because of past debacles, but I feel a lot better about this hire than I did about Cameron, queasy, or Gase.

I also fully realized, and accepted the fact that no good, proven HC was likely to take this job.

Time will tell but I think so. I do think that guys like O'Shea, Schumplinski, Caldwell (before LOA), Flaherty,Godsey and Boyer are clear additions to the coaching staff though
