This is old. I found a seven part series on by Bill Walsh where he explains wants in a QB for the WCO. Since Miami is going to run a version of the WCO, I thought this would be a great time for us to see exactly what Bill Walsh looked for in a QB.

Wow no comment? I thought this would be helpful. Shrug. :)

He's essentially just going through the footwork and explaining how it ties in to a specific progression.

When the back foot hits on a 3, 5, or 7 step drop with no hitch, the ball has to come out and hit the first progression in the key. When you start adding in the hitches, gather steps, and sprint outs.... that's what takes you to your 2nd and 3rd progressions in the key. It's all based on timing.

The feet take the eyes to where the football needs to go. You'll often hear me talk about a quarterbacks feet being tied in to what his eyes are seeing... this is what it pertains to unless it's a coverage read system as opposed to a progression key system like the WCO. It's basic stuff that you'll see being taught at any CPC coaching clinic or NFA camp to scholarship quarterbacks all across the country.

The routes in Walsh's offense aren't numbered, but rather have names... which is why the terminology of the WCO is unique, and typically takes quarterbacks a while to learn. Coach Walsh didn't use a route tree to structure route combinations.

Walsh QB manual is available online if you can find it. Highly reccomend reading it.

thanks for the links, that is really cool to see. i see so much debate on whether our coaching is bad or if the talent isn't there, the player was put in a position to fail, not put in a position to succeed, can't succeed with those recievers, or that line, that quarterback,, that running back,,, on and on. i watch bill walsh coach and those players execute, after years of not playing,,,, it just makes me sad cause i don't think we have the talent or the coaching,,, or the drive and committment. hope i'm wrong,, maybe i'll have another beer and feel better.

Thank you, good stuff, I learned a lot.

Thanks for this helpfull post. Think Montana and Young. Now both were all time great but the skill set they had is what you need.
