Regardless of how many tickets the Dolphins sell this year, all of their homes games are guaranteed to air on local television.
The NFL has suspended its blackout rule for the second consecutive season, according to SportsBusiness Journal’s Daniel Kaplan.
The FCC already eliminated sports blackouts on local television in 2014 but the league is still enable to enforce blackouts with private contracts set with broadcasters and cable companies.
At this point it would be a surprise if the blackout rule ever returns to the NFL.
It might have made sense years ago when the majority of revenue came from ticket sales. But TV contracts — not ticket sales — drive the NFL, which has become an absurdly successful organization.
Most NFL games are sold out anyway. And some teams, like the Dolphins, would purchase enough of their own unused tickets to lift the blackout.
