Bob Griese 1967-80 (14 seasons)
Dan Marino 1983-99 (17 seasons)

Bob Griese had a power running game and the offense wasn't very pretty at times, but produced 2 Super Bowl Championships.

Dan Marino had the electric offense with the power to go deep at any time, but produced 0 Super Bowl Championships.

Question for you the fans, Which QB would you rather have? The one that gave the Dolphins two championships or the QB that made the offense sparkle, but no championships?

anyone who answers sparkle and no rings isnt a fan.....i mean you root for the team to win, not to look pretty and lose.

I want superbowls, but Griese didnt single handedly win superbowls and it sure as hell isnt Dan's fault that we didnt win superbowls. In terms of talent I think Dan probably blows griese out of the water, imo.

Bob Greise had not only a great running game that once produced 2 1000 yard rushers in one season, he had a great defense that was a big part of the Super Bowl teams. I would darn near bet my life that Dan would have won Super Bowls with those teams.

I am not trying to bash you personally or anything, but I think you phrased the question the wrong way. It seems like you have the perception of QBs that many do, which is that if they don't have a ring, there is something wrong with them.

Did you know that 14 of the top 20 leading TD passers in the history of the game don't have a ring? And throwing the ball and putting points on the board is the main goal of a QB.

You can't win a Super Bowl without a balanced team. That means that you have to be able to both score and keep people from scoring. Every team that has won a Super Bowl has had a defense ranked in the top 10 in points allowed. Dan only had a defense in the top 10 five times in his whole career. And two of them were in his first two years when he was still learning the game. One of them was during his last two years when he was always hurt and not near his prime.

So anyone who thinks it is Dan's fault that he doesn't have a ring does not understand fundamental aspects of football. There are people who don't think Dan is a great QB simply because of the fact he doesn't have a ring. That is absolutely insane to say. He did his job better than anyone has ever done it. And he did it without a good running game or a good defense for the majority of the time. Yet he consistently led an offense that was top 10 in points scored and helped get teams to the playoffs. How is that not being a great QB?

bob and the team, but if you asking just which QB, anyone who answers bob is just..well, i wont say it

The question is somewhat of a trap question. Of course Dan was a better QB. But Bob won 2 championships. If all things are equal on the team each played for, I would take Dan as the QB without question.

This is not a fair comparison. Griese played with several Hall of Famers and a great defense with several all pros whereas Marino only played with one Hall of Famer (Dwight Stephenson), some very poor defenses with only a handful of defensive pro bowlers.

Good points,
Dan was the better QB(as far as talent), but Bob won championships.
Both Qb's at one time or another did have outstanding defenses.

In Greise's 10 years with the Dolphins after the merger, he had 9 defenses ranked in the top 10 in points allowed. In Dan's 17 years with us, he had 5 defenses in the top 10 in points allowed.

Bob or Dan?

Bob was an outstanding field general. He had mobility and probably one of the best minds in the game. He was an extension of Shula. Behind him one of the best backfields of all-time. In front of him one of the best O-Lines of all-time. On the outside he had Hall of Famer WR Paul Warfield.

Did you notice the discussion during today's telecast where the broadcasters stated that the lowest passing total in the NFL was by the Miami Dolphins versus the Oakland Raiders in December 1973? Well, we won that game on the backs of our running game and defense.

But on talent and the ability to take over a game and make the players on his team better - Dan Marino is without a doubt "the man". I would guess that Shula and even Griese would agree with that. Remember that Marino is considered one of the Top 5 QB's of all-time and Griese, for all my admiration of him, is not.
