Strengths:
Quick, explosive athlete
Despite height, gets to ball at high point to break-up pass
Positional versatility. Can play both inside and outside
Fluid hips. Changes direction well
Physical when coming forward. Willing to get involved in run game and is a good wrap-up tackler
Does a solid job diagnosing routes and breaking on them to make plays
Good return ability
Weaknesses:
Lacks ideal size to play outside
Inconsistent with footwork when asked to play less coverage
Despite hip fluidity, struggles to turn and run with vertical receivers
Labored in his backpedal
Plays deep off coverage. Will have to work on playing closer to the line of scrimmage
Bigger receivers can out-muscle him
Gets over aggressive in hand fighting. Could get in penalty trouble in the NFL
Injury History:
Injury forced 3 missed games in 2013
Overview:
McCain is another physical, aggressive cornerback from the American Athletic Conference. He lacks the physical size and strength that is ideal, but he is a hard worker who is willing to do the little things that many are not. McCain can play both inside and outside, doing a solid job at both. He has a good football IQ, diagnosing plays and attacking them.
He does get inconsistent with his footwork when he is asked to play press coverage, and is best fit for off coverage. He also struggles when facing bigger receivers, as they can overpower him. McCain should be a solid slot cornerback option in the NFL, with the ability to help on the outside.
