Barry Bonds found his elusive power stroke in Denver's thin air.

Bonds homered for the first time this season Saturday night at Coors Field, sending a belt-high fastball from right-hander Aaron Cook 384 feet to left for his 709th career home run.

After circling the bases, Bonds knocked fists with teammates Moises Alou and Pedro Feliz and manager Felipe Alou as he descended into the third-base dugout to jeers and a scattering of applause.

Bonds moved within five home runs of Babe Ruth for the most by a left-handed hitter with 714. It came in his 31st at-bat and 13th game.

For San Francisco's surly slugger, it was one of the longest homerless streaks to start the season. In 1998, he didn't homer until his 13th game and 50th at-bat, the longest season-opening drought of his career when healthy.

i dont think he is on steroids.

Maybe not now that he's had the grand jury on his back but at some point in his career he's had to ok done it u don't get that big that quick.

He still has not been pitched too that often this year. I don't know exactly the numbers but it had to equate to around 25 at bats without a homer. I think he's still going to hit quite a few this year but he is the biggest story in sports right now which is really incredible.

ESPN is in bed with Bonds. They gave him a reality show. They want him exclusivly.

Proving what I have been saying for years, want real sports news.........don't turn to ESPN!! I haven't watched SportsCenter in years. It's a joke. It's not even a sports show anymore. I only tune into ESPN for games, that's it. Everything else is laughable.

that is so damn annoying, it makes me hate Bonds even more.

ESPN is only good for baseball tonight. NFL Live is a joke, clayton and mort are the only guys that make sense, and they're usually not even there. Salisberry is a total idiot. Dont even get me started on the three stooges whom ESPN put as the hosts of americas most popular show. NBA fastbreak is average...nothing special, you can probably read this board and get better info, but baseball tonight is good and actually worth watching.
But what I hate is that friggin 'Chasing Ruth' label next to his stats.

anywhoo....most of the power in the swing comes from your hips, you have to wait and explode your hips...bonds seems to be doing that alittle slow. Im guessing because overall his body is old and tired. All his hits seem to be going just short of the fence. My guess is theres something in his mechanics that he's not thinking about. In coors field, in the mile high stadium with thin air, at night, he barley got it over a 350 foot fence. Don't expect him to go on a HR rampage all of a sudden.

I think Alou was right, he didnt play last year and missed most of spring training, he just needs reps to get rid of the rust, which is even hard for him because he is walked all the time.

Dude I totally forgot about that.

I won't watch it because I stopped caring about baseball 10 years ago. If the Marlins are doing something, I'll pay attention and root out of home loyalty. But baseball lost me years ago. Too bad because i was a HUGE baseball guy.

since the Game of Shadows book has begun putting real pressure on baseball and Bonds this spring, ESPN has been shameless in its attemtps to downplay the importance of the book, and the allegations against Bonds. consider that they signed him to do this reality show and pay him more scratch knowing what was coming.

ESPN baseball commentators Olney, Gammons, and Kirkjian have openly and incessantly whined since the excerpts from the book were published in SI that "no good can come of this." baseballs "hands are tied" and "why open this can of worms?" they all just wanted this to go away.

after all, it reflects very poorly on them because most media types and especially the ESPN guys, as tuned in as they are, knew exactly what was going on and they turned a blind eye to it.

Roger Maris and Hank Aarron deserve so much more than this. the first thing that needs to happen is Mark McGwire needs to publicly apologize to the Maris family, who were so suportive of him during his chase, and then the record books need to be wiped clean of McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Canseco, Palmeiro, and a few others...

ill step down off my soap box now... can you tell ive just about finished reading Game of Shadows?

of course he isnt anymore... they test now. and he has been investigated for it. though with Bonds, he might be arrogant enough to continue anyway.
