This is not a Beck bashing post. Just a rational point.
Look. Becks chance to stick with this team is this simple.........
Does the FO and coaching staff feel that John Beck will be a better backup to Pennington than Josh McCown? Its that simple. If they think Beck can go in there should Pennington go down and help us win games, he will stay. If they dont, then they will keep McCown.
Of those two guys they are going to select the QB that they feel will help us win if they need to play for an injured Pennington. Cut and dry.
This is why I say that. There is NO QUESTION that Pennington IS our starter. There is also NO QUESTION that it is Chad Henne who is the guy that is being groomed to be the QB of the future for this franchise. The guy has already come in and been impressive in camp with his rocket arm and toughness. He was the guy selected by this regime.
There is no keeping Beck for the purpose of battling with Henne to see who is the QB of the future. Forget about that. If Beck sticks it will be simply because the FO feels he is a better backup QB than Josh McCown.
And if you dont think the FO drafting Henne makes it next to impossible for Beck to win them over as the QB of the future, just take a look at what happened in Green Bay. That GM's first selection with the team was Rogers. They ran off BRETT FAVRE to make sure Rogers starts this year, the final year on his rookie contract. BP and CO. are dead set on Henne being the QB of the future for this team. For Beck to unseat Henne in that role he would have to first beat McCown as the backup and then be MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE when he gets opportunities to play. And even if he does that there is still no guarentee that the FO replaces Henne with Beck as the main guy in the "QB of the future" role.
Bottom line----Pennington is our starter
Henne is our QB of the future.
That leaves one role. Backup QB. Not only for Pennington but, possibly Henne's backup in the future.
And really thats all John Beck can hope for. Ive stated all along that he is at best a backup QB in this league....AT BEST. But, tons of people on here insisted he was a virtual lock to start for us this year. NAW. Now that its clear that isnt happening they still insist he will be kept to be groomed ALONG WITH Henne.....NAW.
If he is kept its to help us win games should Pennington get injured. And thats why I feel he will most likely be a goner. I just dont see how you can put Beck in a real game(regular season) right now and expect him to perform. He hasnt given any indication at all that he can do that.
McCown on the other hand, although he has been terrible in camp, has a proven track record of being able to be a backup in this league, and even spot start, and have SOME success. Beck hasnt. I just dont see how they can keep Beck over McCown given the fact that the only role left to be filled is the backup QB spot.
Look guys, the writing has been on the wall for Beck. I know its difficult for most of you to want to read it, but its there. If Beck plays well tonight, look for him to be shopped for a while. If they find a deal he is traded. If not he is released. If he bombs tonight, look for him to be released sooner than later.
Peace.
