Dolphins assistant head coach-secondary Todd Bowles is in Detroit this afternoon for his second interview with the team as it searches for a new head coach.

Although other names such as Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier also are getting second interviews, it is fair to believe Bowles is among the group of leading contenders for the job because he is in for a second look. Bowles last week interviewed in Detroit and then Denver.
This looks like Bowles best shot at landing a head coaching job this offseason. He interviewd for the Broncos, Rams and Lions job. The Broncos went with someone else, and the Rams seem to be focusing in on others.

Still though, I will be a little surprised if he gets the Lions job. I won't be totaly shocked, but I believe they will pick someone else. With that said, today's development is not great news for the Dolphins.

Thanks for the update Nublar.

Bittersweet type of thing. I would love to see a Dolphin's assistant move onto a more promising career, but I also don't want to lose someone who is apparently good enough to be a Head coach.

I rooting for him to get it, but won't be too disappointed if he does not.

Best of luck to Todd either way.

If Ford hadn't already foolheartedly extended those 2 front office bozos, I'd be sweating right now that Detroit is setting up as an ideal HC/GM Tuna platter. Their HC "search" is IMO dragging out suspiciously long.

When your position coaches are getting interviews that just means were done something right. The more we win the more coaches will need to be replaced every year, that really means our system needs to be great (like what NE has) in order to keep the train headed in the same direction through constant change.

From my understanding it's down to Shwartz and Bowles in Detroit.

Bowles has said that despite being interviewed by other teams, it's the Lions job that he wants.

I'm sure it's Shwartz's job to lose. He already held a press conference about the state of the team and started talking about what to do. That seemed weird. I can't see how Bowles is ready for that kind of jump but it is the Detroit Lions after all!!

Gotta love NE getting ripped apart again!!! I just hope that as they are falling down - everyone in the league lines up to kick the S#$% out of them on the way down. Belicheat had no mercy or cares for any team he played when they were on top. I hope the pay back is BIG!!! I know I am going to sit back and :beer1:!

if Bowles does get that job...do we have another position coach on our staff we can promote to replace him,or will we have to bring somebody else in?

At first I thought their interest in him may have had more to do with complying with the Rooney Rule than anything else, but since he's getting a second interview I guess he is a serious contender for the job. Seems like quite a big promotion, Detroit must really like something about him.

The idea of him getting the job is not really surprising. Sparano was an oline coach, Sean Payton was a QB coach, Jim Zorn was a QB coach, John Harbaugh was a DB coach when they all got head coaching jobs.

The thing that is intriguing to teams about Bowles is that he is part of the Bill Parcells tree and was a key part of this amazing turnaround. Also, according to Sparano, he could easily take charge of a room during Defense meetings.

I wonder though if Bowles were to get the job whether or not he would try and hire any coaches from our current staff. Of course though, he couldn't hire any coaches without permission from the Dolphins. The only way a coach can leave a team they are under contract with is if it is for a head coaching job. For example, David Lee(QB coach) couldn't leave even if he was offered the OC job. Miami could give Lee permission to leave, but he just couldn't get up and go. Remember that Miami tried to hire Pete Carmichael(QB coach for the Saints) the last two offseasons as OC, but the Saints put a clamp on that.

Hopefully Parcells doesn't have any feelings of helping Bowles get going on putting together his staff. Of course, all of this is moot if Bowles doesn't get the job.

Good for him if he gets the job. I guess Baltimore can breathe easy that noone will take away thier offensive coordinator ever lol.

1.The Lions are having all their finalists hold PCs talking about the team. And as mentioned by Nublar before, Sparano made the jump for us, Harbough made a similar jump for Baltimore. Yeah Marinelli failed (though that had a lot to do with how he wanted to build the team and what Millen gave him). I think Bowles is ready as most consider him a future HC (I don't think anybody thought Marinelli would be a HC), and Bowles was considered for our HC position along with Sparano.

2.THe Pats have lost 2 OCs and 2 DCs since they last won the Super Bowl. Crennel and Mangini have both been fired (Mangini taking Crennel's job), and Weis is on the hot seat at Notre Dame. Billicheck will find somebody to place McDaniels (you could pull any bum off the street when you have Randy Moss and the rest of the skill players NE has and look like a genius), but the difference is they really don't have anybody that is considered a future HC anymore (Crennel and Weis many thought were long overdue, Mangini and McDaniels were considered to be two of the hottest young assistants in the NFL before they became OC and DC)

It's dragging out because the new GM is being very careful with this selection. Both SJim Schwartz and Boles have received second interviews and both have been put in front of the media for a press conference. That's just how careful they are being. Schwartz seems to be the favorite.

On a side note, just for you Vaark. I got this from my hometown newspaper, coincidentally the Detroit Free Press and knew I had to post it for you.
