There was some discussion on another thread about drafting BPA or draft for need. I believe in BPA, but I understand if others disagreed. Let me ask this question. If you were Fins management and you believed a franchise player had dropped to your spot, is there any position on our team that you would not draft said franchise player?

BPA has to be taken with a grain of salt, right? If a WR or QB drops to 22 and he is the BPA versus an MLB that is rated slightly lower who do you think the Fins take? I'd hope they would go with the MLB. No player is a sure thing (Ryan Leaf) so I'd have to hope the FO chooses BPA weighted toward needs. Also, we are picking 22. It's not like picking 3rd or 4th where most of those guys will be a near sure thing (maybe not RG3 or Dion Jordan). At 22 you're getting a really good player at any position still.

There's no such thing as BPA. It's a ridiculous strategy invented by GMs in interviews to mask their true intentions.

I think >t means if a potential stud cb or rb or safety is sitting there do you grab him even if a projected middle of road mlb is sitting there. I am for grabbing a stud at almost any position but a defensive body would be great.

I'll ask a specific question.....If OJ Howard now drops to 22 would we take him?........Probably not.

I may be the wrong guy to answer as I don't follow college players as much as I should. My first thought is why would did this guy drop to 22 if he's a projected stud. If there is a viable answer to that and he is a top 10 talent I take him. That is unless another defensive blue chip in the eyes of the experts is sitting there. So BPA at a need unless it's some freak that we thought wouldn't be there. A solid BPA at any position is money down the line but it is of course subjective due to no guarantees in drafting.

Knowing what I know now I would have taken Gronk, Tony G ay any draft position but like I said hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes you have to draft with your heart. I would love to have two studs at a position and get value in a trade for that person like some other teams do.

Howard is way overhyped, IMO. I know Alabama is a run first team, but if Howard is the stud he is advertised to be, wouldn't Alabama have found a way to get the ball to him a lot more than they did?

imo, "BPA" is subjective and positions of need must be factored in the equation. Just because a WR is the most talented player at 22 doesn't mean he's the best choice for the Dolphins, especially if a slightly lower rated LB is also available

It all depends on the players in question, the gap in talent and the round. For example Miami needs a linebacker more than a running back. If there's a potential hall of fame running back on the table and a potential starting linebacker as well... I say take the running back. Leonard Fournette ve Raekwon McMillian... take Fournette. It's easier to find a potential starter in free agency or trade than it is to acquire hall of fame potential. Take the players that have the best chances of having the most NFL success. You can always trade them or the player they're replacing to acquire more talent. I know Miami needs linebacking help, but don't go chasing a B or C level player if there is an A level player at another position on the table. If it's an A level vs an A- that's a different story.

I believe that part of the reason Miami isn't further along is that the team has virtually always been a slave to need.

Yes, it's important to fill needs, but not at the expense of consistently leaving better talent on the table. Other teams end up getting the better players. Examples are too many to name, but one I'll point out was when the team traded down to get Jared Odrick and Koa Misi. That move meant that the team missed out on a number of elite players including Earl Thomas.

I think this draft looks to match up talent with need, which is what you want to see. I think this draft is loaded at safety and tight end, but there's also a lot of talent at corner and defensive end. I think there are a number of quality linebacker as well, but have to get one pretty early.

Three rules about the drafts.
1. Think long term.
2. Never draft for need.
3. Always take the blue-chipper unless you have a 1st ballot HOF in the position.
The Tunsil pick is great example of all three.

God no. Not when we have multiple holes each of which are bigger than the one that sank the titanic

Stud players fall in the first round because there is usually a panic run on at least one position, usually left tackles, pass rushing ends, and quarterbacks. Then the best RB, MLB, OG, or Safety falls out of the top 15 or top 20. Of course then the question comes up as to whether the top OG, MLB, etc...is only the stud of that position in the current draft, or if historically, they'd just be a 2nd or top of the 3rd round talent in better classes.

For me it depends on what is done in free agency. If we can hit on a few pieces then bpa might work out best.
