Those with their memory intact will remember the Ravens with Billick as HC. He was a hired to repair the Ravens moribund offense. Instead, the Ravens developed the best defense in the. NFL. McD was hired due to his being a run game guru. Instead, the Fins run game is anemic but the passing game (in part due to Tua’s emergence and Hill and Waddle) is thriving. Billick had a 2000 yard rusher but no QB… McD has no OLine and 2 good, not great rushers. There is usually a reason why things turn out as they do. Billick won a SB. Let’s hope the same for the Fins… when the defense improves. Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah to all.

I get what you're saying, and I see pretty much the same thing. I knew nothing about McDaniel, but when he was hired, I kept hearing how he was going to improve the play of the o-line and the run game with his fancy blocking schemes. And, an improved running game would hopefully open up the passing game. Last year's passing game was okay, but the WRs (and Gesicki) didn't get much separation; maybe they would have more room if defenders were focused on stopping the run.

However, Miami's offense didn't turn out that way, mostly because they still can't build a decent o-line. They did get Armstead and Williams, but Hunt was the only guy from last season who should have been guaranteed a starting role. Those three are the only decent starting caliber linemen they have, and Armstead, a part-timer due to injuries, is the only one who could be considered dominant. Everyone else on the roster is either just a back-up or a "to be used in case of emergency as a last resort" player. Yet again, Miami's best o-linemen are players that they didn't draft (Hunt is decent, but he's no Armstead). That said, the line looks okay, but it's mostly because the speed of Hill and Waddle combined with an improved Tua's quick release makes them appear better than they really are. But when Armstead is out, the play of the line drops off significantly.

As I said, I was expecting an above average running game that would help the passing game. but, with Tua, Hill, and Waddle, the passing game has become the strength of the offense. So now, it's the passing game that should be helping the running game, but it's just not happening. Mostert and Wilson are decent enough, but their big runs are few and far between. Also, they're not very good at 3rd or 4th and short on the ground. I blame a weak o-line for this, and the fact that they don't have a bruising power back for these situations. On one hand, McDaniel just isn't calling enough running plays, but on the other hand, the passing game is very effective (unless Tua is out or has a bad day), so why not use it.

I can definitely see Miami as a Super Bowl team, but first they need to finish fixing the o-line and get a better defense.

The issue with the running game is the OL. They have had to play with backup offensive linemen at one position or more most of the season.

I am sure McDaniel would love to have a more balanced attack but it is going to take a few seasons for him to get the players on the OL who can be effective in the running game he wants to implement.

The OL is a little better in the passing game but not much better. Fortunately Tua is able to read the pass coverage and get rid of the ball quickly and therefore it is up to Tua and the receivers to move the offense and that is likely to be the situation until the OL is upgraded.

I'm pretty sure McD's intent at first was going to be run heavy when he got hired. But since they got Hill, that threw that plan out the window.

Yes, Brian Billick was Head Coach when the Defense was completely dominant but the coach he appointed to make the big difference to the Baltimore Ravens Defense was actually the humble old foot fetish freak, Rex Ryan. Oh, and they also had a handy little linebacker named Ray Lewis at his peak.

I don’t want to wait “a few seasons” for an OL.
Sign two free agents, draft 2, and look for an UDFA or two.

Chris Grier has failed to rebuild the OLine in the draft. He’s from the Belicheat school… multiple Corners, OLine low draft picks. The difference is he had the best OLine coach in the business Dante Scarnecchia. The Fins had coke heads and failures.
