Maybe we give up a little of that run stopping ability but we're more aggressive and cause lots of turnovers.
For Ireland to pay so much for Wheeler and move so quickly, I don't think that he is planning for it to be just an even swap. Burnett was solid and the easy thing for Ireland would have been to sit on his hands and put his efforts into the many other RFA's we pursued. The pursuit of younger, faster linebackers with an aptitude to make sacks and pressure the QBs is a deliberate strategy being implemented. I hope that it works.
Good luck to him.
Its funny 'cause he is replacing the guy who replaced him.
You're right. he looked at Wheeler last year and by moving so quickly now can be perceived that he is correcting his mistake. He should have picked Wheeler over Guyton. It would make a good question for Armando or Omar if Ireland concedes that he got it wrong.Doesnt make it more than an even swap. I guess you forget we looked at wheeler last year and obviously Ireland did not see an upgrade and was looking for him as just depth. One season doesnt make Wheeler a better player. Wheeler is not faster but is silghtly younger. Like I said the great Ireland did not see all this in Wheeler last year instead we got Guyton. So his evaluation is far from perfect

You act as if that has never happened before. Like 32 (or 30 back then) teams passed over Zach Thomas for 4 rounds until we picked him in the 5th I believe. Do you think after he spent a year in Miami those same teams would have passed on him again?? Not saying for a second that Wheeler is Zach, but you can't down play the guy because last year Ireland passed on him. Now after seeing his body of work, he seems to be the aggressive player we need.Just saying last year he did not see Wheeler as a viable backup , yet starter and now everyone want to act like sigining him long term over Burnett is such an awesome move

Burnett was one of my favorite players on defense. I loved his game 10x more than Koa, but I also understand he was just a safe player. He rarely got beat, but he never made game changing plays either. Wheeler will get beat much more often but he will also take chances that will change games. He attacks the offense, rather than the offense attacking him. He will hit the RBs in the backfield rather than letting them come to him. When he makes mistakes they will be mistakes of too much effort rather than being safe. Clemons is the same way, he is way too safe. Clemons makes safe plays and rarely gives up the huge plays any more, but he doesn't get the turnovers either. That is why he only got a one year deal IMO.
In todays NFL you have to have game changers on defense. Those willing to gamble from time to time, in order to change the outcome of games. Dansby and Burnett were two solid safe LBs. Wheeler and Ellerbe are two agressive, slighly less disciplined LBs who will make mistakes, but also make more plays. We have been in the bottom half of the league in forcing turnovers for far too long. Changes had to be made, and we started making that change without it costing us an arm and a leg. Whether you agree with the philosophy or not, it is hard not to see that is what they are doing. They got their targets, whether they overpaid only time will tell.
