The Miami Dolphins will watch the payroll department send a check to Byron Maxwell for the rest of the league year. Then, they won’t be sending him anything after that.
In a trade that brought Maxwell to Miami the Dolphins have essentially paid to eat his contract so they could have Kiko Alonso who is actually playing well. Maxwell however is watching his days dwindle.
For now Maxwell can take comfort or rather save face that he is injured. Reality however is that for the 2nd season in a row, he got benched. This year in favor of rookie Cordrea Tankersley who is improving week to week.
Maxwell has been a bust in Miami and while some would like to sugarcoat it after his resurgence following the benching 2016, the truth is Maxwell was nothing more than serviceable. Sorry PFF but your rankings are not entirely accurate.

Howard, Tank and Lipp are three very decent (and cheap!) corners if they keep improving and growing like they should. Mix in TJM and Jones, just need some competence at slot and the secondary will be quite good for 2-3 seasons.

Whether he was freelancing or not. Giving that cushion to his opposite WR when he is supposed to be a man coverage CB was a head scratcher.

everyone knew this was coming, no doubt he was going to be released following the season. we have no cap space with the signing of Jay Cutler and there is zero cap hit to cut his $10m deal. Howard and Tankersley are the future at corner, plus hopefully Lippett is back healthy. Maxwell was always a stop gap and his antics are just going to cost him in his next deal.

He did force a lot of fumbles last year but I don't think we recovered any. That punch move of his is pretty good. Got one this year too. But man did he play soft in coverage at times. I still don't understand how he could stifle Antonio Brown an entire game and then get smoked play in and play out by Brian Hartline-esque types.

Watch Maxwell go back to Seattle and play lights out ala Wes Welker, Chris Hogan, etc..
