"So appreciate what he brought: fleeting optimism that was in full bloom on April 23, 2006.
Chris Chambers, coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, held his inaugural CATCH 84 charity kickoff party at Shula's Steak 2 in Miami. Saban, coming off a strong 9-7 first NFL season, mingled for an hour. Wes Welker chatted with Randy McMichael. Tommy Davidson, a close friend of Culpepper, told jokes, including this one directed at an all-white-wearing Ricky Williams: "Just one more test, Ricky. Lawrence Taylor and Barry Bonds are conducting the test, so you ain't got nothing to worry about. You're going to be on the team."
And, during a live auction, Culpepper's replica jersey raised $5,000, $1,000 more than two Super Bowl tickets.
At the event's conclusion, Culpepper, Chambers, McMichael and Williams posed for a photo of what promised to be a dynamic new offense.
"That was a classic," Chambers said afterward, noting that Marty Booker and Ronnie Brown weren't even in the photo. "
The above is from a Sun-Sentinel article. Things were looking good then. Too bad it didn't pan out...
