Caleb Sturgis rookie year in review: Cause for concern?

Could be worse. We could have drafted Hopkins instead of Sturgis
Why? The Hopkins injury forced the Bills to go with a vet instead of a rookie kicker and probably won them some games. A healthy Hopkins is still an unknown whereas the way Sturgis played as a rookie wasn't exactly reassuring. I still think Hopkins was the better kicker in college by quite a bit.

Hopefully Sturgis gets better after a year under his belt. Rookie kickers always seem to hit rough patches. We'll know more what kind of kicker he is this year.

Because Hopkins would have been another wasted pick. The bills just re-signed Carpenter, doesn't sound reassuring for Hopkins. At least our kicker position is settled and not a mystery.

Roster limitations forced them to stick Hopkins on the IR last year. The Bills are probably just playing it safe and letting the kicker position be decided in TC. Hopkins is a damn promising kicker and as long as his balls didn't get ripped off with that groin injury of his then I can't imagine he wouldn't be picked up immediately by another team if the Bills decide to stick with Carp and cut Hopkins. Wasting a 6th round pick on a player who could potentially be one of the best kickers in the league wasnt that big a risk.

The kid is going to be clutch ..... After seeing the rook kick 2 - 56 yds vs Atlanta back to back sold me.... Less 50 + yd attempts Willl help his average

Not ready to give up on Sturgis just yet. Though I would sign an UDFA to compete with him and put some pressure on him.

I keep him around for next year for a couple of reasons. First, I don't realistically envision us as a playoff team next season so I don't think it's critical to replace him now. Second, the kid has tremendous upside if he can get over the jitters he caught last season.

I would bring Olindo Mare back! I don't like Sturgis - he's the stereotypical puny, wimpy looking kicker. Aside from the fact that he sucks at kicking FGs, could you see him tackling anyone on a busted return? His kickoffs are pretty good - I'll give him that.

Mare wouldn't really be a step up in that regard either

It is only the guys second year upcoming, give me a break. There is no concern on my part. He will kick ass in 2014, wait and see.
