Campbell vs. Aromashodu

campell, only for expereince purposes. next year aromashodu should be fighting for the fourtth, maybe 3rd depening upon bookers plans aftrer this season.

im watching an AUB. from last year and Aromashodu seems to be there main target but there qb from last year doent seem good at a all

With Devin signing a 4 year contract, I believe the Dolphins may intend to roster 6 wide receivers, at the expense of one running back...or perhaps at the expense of one linebacker.

Initially I thought Campbell and Aromashodu were in competition...but everyone has seen Campbell pull away in mini camps before Aromashodu even gets much of a chance to do anything...and signing Aromashodu to an exotic 4 year contract instead of the traditional 3 year deal, while knowing full well that the dude doesn't have a shot of making the roster as 5th WR, is like just tossing $30,000 in extra signing bonus down a well.

somewhere along the line I recall Nick saying something about backing off Wes as a reciever...he wants him fresh as a return man.

I said it in another post and will say it again. I think Campbell and Devin could end up being our 4th and 5th and Wes Welker could be the odd man out. If Campbell or Devin proves to be an upgrade or even comperable to Welker as a return man he might not make the team. I have heard nothing but good things about Campbell and his chemistry with Culpepper adds to his value. At this point I would be surprised to see him not make the team. The 4 year deal given to Devin shows they are high on him as well and physicall he has loads of upside. While I know everyone is rooting for Wes and he has done an admirable job everywhere we have used him, he has limitations. He is very undersized at WR and doesn't have the speed to be an elite return man. So it may not be that the Dolphins are looking to carry 6 recievers but that they feel Campbell, Aromashodu, and Hagan make Wes expendable.

I remember hearing other people say that but I cant recall whether or not Nick has said it. I'm not denying it, though my feeling is that Wes Welker would be super in a Wayne Chrebet type role...but I I'm not sure whether I've heard Saban actually talking about that.

Here this is what I found...

Nick Saban Day 1 Wrap-Up Press Conference Transcript
April 30, 2006

(Opening Remarks) -- “We’re obviously very pleased. Receiver was one of the areas that we had targeted in this draft. Derek Hagan was one of our top guys at that position. He’s a guy that probably was very highly rated going into this draft. He was at the Senior Bowl. We got to see him. He was kind of a big play guy there and a go to guy. He dropped some balls, made some people question some interest in him. A little inconsistent at the combine but I think when you go back and actually watch the guy play at Arizona State which we spent a significant amount of time doing, he made a tremendous amount of big plays there and was a very consistent catcher and seemed to do a little bit better in the games than he did maybe in the drill work. So we were not concerned about his speed because even in comparison to some of the faster receivers, this guy had, for his size, which is unusual, one of the top ten yard dash times in terms of start quickness, coming out of breaks, that type of thing. That’s something that interested us quite a bit as well. So he’s a fine young man. We’re very pleased to have him in the organization.

“We knew that we had an issue in terms of having two good receivers, not really having a third right now. Wes (Welker) has done an outstanding job for us. He’s a great slot guy. He’s a good special teams guy. He’s a good return guy for us. But to have a third receiver that could probably maybe play either side, you know Marty (Booker) can do that as well, and probably get involved in some three wide receiver sets so we’re not getting Wes in a situation where he has to play all the time and wear him down. So we feel this is a great addition to us. This guy does have, because of his size and speed, I think, some vertical ability to go get the ball. So we’re very pleased with this selection. We were looking at the quarterbacks that were available but at the same time we felt like that’s something that we’re going to try to solve in a different way. Hopefully we’ll be able to get that done. It’s something that’s important to us, but we were very much interested in the quarterbacks at this time in the draft as well. Charlie (Whitehurst) and Brodie (Croyle), we really have a lot of respect for both guys.â€Â

Seems to be that Wes is still going to be used as a slot WR...but he brings up some valid fears. If Wes is your 3rd WR...what happens if one of your outside guys goes down with injury? All the sudden you've got to use Wes, a midget, on the outside running verticals. That would hurt.

His reference to Booker also makes it very clear to me that Hagan is Booker's eventual replacement.

I mean we're obviously out to take some pressure off Welker to keep him fresh for returns, but I hope that doesn't mean we stop using him in the slot. I think that guy is a gifted chain-mover.

Only problem here is that Saban has never given any indication that Wes Welker is even close to in jeopardy. In fact, the quote I put above seems to indicate clearly that Wes is still an important part of our plans but that we don't want to risk forcing him to play on the outside at WR at some point.

We don't have anyone that's a good punt returner aside from Wes Welker. Campbell has never returned a punt in the NFL. Aromashodu was not the PR at Auburn, just the KR. Travis Minor can be a backup KR but has never done PRs.

You know who our backup PR is? Marty Booker. For that reason alone I'd say Welker is safe.

i personally think campbell will be higher than our #5 wr, the guys got a lot of speed and he's familiar with daunte......i have a feeling that its going to be a major battle between wes and campbell for #4 or possibly even the #3 wr spot, with the loser returning punts and kickoffs and the winner seeing more playing time

I totally agree...good find;
so we’re not getting Wes in a situation where he has to play all the time and wear him down.

that is what I remewmber being discussed

my thought is that chambers, booker, welker and hagan are locks. then campbell will have to underachieve to lose his final spot. I figure Aromashadu will have an uphill battle to beat out Campbell, and if not he will be waived and put on the practice squad. I doubt we will carry 6 WR's, because that would only make sense if campbell or welker were used strictly for special teams, and that is not probable because they both have tools at WR. Also, watch Fred Gibson. He is probably just as much in the mix as is Aromashadu.

Alot of late round draft pick WR's end up not maing final rosters. It would not be suprising if Aromashadu didnt. Last year, Craphonso Thorpe, who was a 4th round pick, was waived by Kansas City and put on there practice squad. Same with Larry Brackins

I'll bet that Campbell becomes your #3.

He has experience and success with in the slot position and he has played with Culpepper before.

i agree campbell could very well be the number 3. hagan might take a year to learn the position and welker really isnt that good.
