Can Chad Still Beat 1 on 1 Coverage Consistently?

If CJ has 1 on 1 Coverage, do you throw the ball to him automatically?

I know there are a lot of questions about CJ and how he will perform, but I think the right questions is: "Can Chad Still Beat 1 on 1 Coverage Consistently?" Consistently being 60% or more of the time. I think that is the real question. That's what it takes to be a #1 WR in the NFL. That's how you take pressure off of the rest of the offense.

My question to you guys:

If CJ has 1 on 1 Coverage, do you throw the ball to him automatically, like you would B. Marsh, A. Johnson, or Larry Fitz?

Personally I dont think that is the case anymore, but I sure as hell hope I am wrong.

He's not an automatic audible if you see him with a corner on an island, unless you're absolutely sure you have a man coverage corner with a cushion, then you likely use Chad's best attribute, his route running. You let him run a stop n go and let him beat the CB. Or run a comeback, assuming the cushion is big enough, and pick up your free easy 15 yards.

Wait I got lost for a second there haha. The real answer is Chad Johnson was never one of those automatic freaks like Johnson Marshall or Fitz. He doesn't use freakish leaping ability or size to win most matchups

Nope, never was a freakish giant like them

My point wasnt about athleticism , while yes I agree it is very nice for those guys to have. I mentioned thos guys off the top of my head, but I could have added guys like DeSean Jackson or Greg Jennings just as easily.

CJ used to beat 1 on 1 coverage all the time. He would even beat 2 on 1 coverage. He was a premiere WR in the NFL for years.

Yes, he was, but not because of his athleticism. Just like we stated. There are lots of reasons a receiver might continuously get open... athleticism being one of them. Chad Johnson was never a receiver who used elite athleticism to constantly get open.

Greg Jennings is much like Johnson, so that's a good comparison. DeSean Jackson is not because he's not a particularly strong route runner or deceptive mover. He's just flat out FAST as hell. If you see a CB on an island with Jackson you audible to a fly route (assuming there isn't a 10 yard cushion) and you just throw it deep. He will get behind every single CB in the league.

Chad Johnson's problems in the NFL are not his athleticism or his route running, it's his knowledge of the playbook. There's a huge different between having the feet to run the route tree and knowing where to line up on a play. Or what option a route runs on a certain coverage.

If you know that your guy is 1 on 1 with a CB, then yes, honestly I think you look to Chad. He will likely be open after 2 seconds, depending on the route.

Yes he can. The problem is that you don't know if he's going to run the correct route, based on the pre-snap read.

I don't think has ever been an issue. With an accurate quarterback there's no reason Chad cant put up solid numbers. I think the system has to be player friendly if you know what I mean

I voted "n" on the poll, but I will qualify my answer by saying that I do not think that the FO expect him to beat "1 on 1" coverage consistently. I was not a fan of this signing, but I think it was a low risk move and one that could potentially have great value. I honestly do not believe that they expect to have Chad as he was at his peak, rather the hope is that he can make defenses think twice, keeping them honest and opening things up underneath for Bess et al. Most people feel that his days as a #1 wideout are at an end.

Yes. I think that he will be the #1 receiver and he will play well. He's only 34, he has gas left in the tank.
