I know Odrick was the prototypical 3-4 defensive end and also played quite well there. He also looks to make a pretty nice transition to defensive tackle if we do play more of a 4-3 formation this upcoming season.

I'm just curious if anyone sees Odrick being able to fill in as a 4-3 end if we use our resources elsewhere this offseason. It would obviously take some work for him to adjust to the position, but for his size (6'5, 300 pounds), he has shown some incredible athletic ability.

Maybe the guy could shed 10-15 pounds and be utilized more in a pass-rushing role?

Thoughts?

I think to get the most out of him, he should play a 4-3 DT. I'm sure he could slide over the LE every once in a while, but I do not think he will be elite at rushing the passer from that position. Good, but not elite. We need an elite pass-rusher IMO.

Could he? Yes
Should he? NO

Not enough speed. He would be very good at DT tho.

Odrick might be faster than you think,, especially if the team asks him to drop 10 lbs. Dude has wheels.

Odrick is a good football player and could probably do it, but it wouldn't be my preference. His lateral movement is not the greatest and dropping weight won't change that. He's better penetrating a single gap on the inside of a defense.

The guy who would be better off at LDE is Merling. He played the position at Clemson and is a good athlete. I'd sign him to a veteran minimum two year deal (combined with signing a veteran or drafting a guy like Coples), tell him to lose like 20 pounds and see what happens.

Making Merling a 3-4 end was always a mistake. My understanding is what happened there is that Ireland wanted to draft Dustin Keller but was caught flat footed when the Jets took him a few picks before. He then took a flyer on a guy in Merling who was a big bodied athlete who had dropped because of injury concerns hoping he could make the transition to a 3-4, but he just couldn't.

He could in a big 43 front. Then move him inside on passing downs. There are 43 teams that implore big de's like Seattle and Ne did as well at times.

Kevin Carter was a decent 4-3 end for us for a couple of seasons and he was a similar size to Odrick

He played some end in the 4-3 this past year do to our lack of pass rushers and did well.I don't think he would ever be a full time end though, he's much better inside or playing end in the 3-4.

as was already stated, the simple answer is,
Can he? Yes
Should he? No

The ideal thing to do is draft a LE or sign one in FA. A D-Line that looks like Wake-Starks-Odrick-FA/Draft sounds pretty good

My 4-3 D

DE - Wake
DT - Odrick
DT - Starks
DE - Cliff Avril (FA)

Langford/McDaniels (Rotation)

OLB - Dansby
MLB - Stephen Tulloch (FA)
OLB - Burnett/Misi

I don't see Odrick as a 4-3 DE, sure he could play there and be average, but he lacks the speed and finess moves to be elite. Rather keep him inside at DT were he dominates.
