Gotta love this kid. Matthews is 6'0" and 210, ran a 4.46 in his Pro day, and was 7th round pick in 2012. His dad is a retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant, went to 7 different high schools, and his dad did not let him play football as a freshman or soph because of grades. He is intelligent, well spoken, great character, VG hands, athletic, and does not shy away from contact.

After flashing a bit as a rookie, last year he played 529 snaps, caught 41 of 62 passes for 448 yards, a 10.9 avg, 4.2 YAC avg, and 2 TD's.

I really like him, and am looking for a breakout season from him.

He can only get better and remember he did not see as many snaps until Gibson went down.

I'd say he already broke out. Only played half a season and put up 500 yards. Keep in mid that he's our 3rd/4th receiver hartline and Wallace will always get a look before he does. Most you can ask from him and Gibson is maybe 800 yards and 5 tds would be amazing for your 3rd/4th receiver

We called so many comeback and hook routes last season, our WRs were constantly playing with their backs to the endzone and our YAC suffered as a result. Hardbfor any receiver to showcase their elusiveness on a bunch of comebacks, but Matthews showed himself to be the only receiver who could turn back upfield quickly and make extra yards.

He's catlike with his balance and power, so in a system that plays to those strengths and has receivers hauling in more catches on the run, i expect Matthews to show more.

His game in the pros so far doesn't shout 6'1" and 4.4, though. He plays smaller and looks a tad slower to me. With more snaps I think he can be a really decent weapon for us.

Yeah, and he did take advantage of his opportunity. With Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson, he is going to have to battle for playing time. I believe he will get it.

I like Rishard Matthews, but his 4.46 pro day number is a bit suspect, since he ran a 4.62 at the NFL combine.

From watching Rishard Matthews on the field, I think reality is somewhere in between. He runs more like a 4.5 guy.

That said, I don't think he'll ever be a star, but he should always have a spot on the active roster.

If everyone stays healthy I don't think he'll have a chance to do anything more than he did last season. I actually look for Gibson to have a big year if he comes back healthy

I have heard Joe Philbin remark several times in press conferences about Matthews' great self confidence. It's like whenever his name comes up, it's the first thing he says about Rishard. He made good progress last season, particularly when given the difficult job of taking Gibson's slot role when he got injured.
We seem to have lots of decent WRs and he is in the mix for more snaps. I would like to see him get more opportunities with Lazor.
The only thing that I didn't like was the display of temperament in a preseason or early season game(?), when Tannehill basically marched him off the ground rather than incur a penalty. It was actually a great display of leadership by Tannehill but I was surprised that Matthews wanted to fight.

They always say you should add 0.05 to 0.1 sec to a Pro Day time. IN any event, He's a guy who demonstrates to me that 40 times are pretty irrelevant (within limits) as to how good a footballer you will turn out to be.

gives us a more vertical presence in the slot where his physical strength to separate with the ball in the air and his run thru contact can show...but it's gonna be hard for him to break out with a more ideal east west or at least more consistent east west true slot in gibson back and hartline and wallace as the other 2 wrs in the 3 wide sets

if he breaks out it will likely be the result of an injury to one of the top 3 but this kid can play and he's a solid part of our core...could id coverage a little better i'd say...not quite the security blankets that gibby and hartline are for tannehill at this point

He started to last year. He is big strong. Reminds me of Gadsden. I like this kid.

I always said that, and before he changed his number to 18 he wore 86. I swear I felt like I was watching Gadsden out there. Similar speed and build.

Yeah...

I'd say he already had his breakout year. We have 4 really solid WR's but none are "ELITE"

Each serve a purpose and play a role. Mathews, after Gibson went down really stepped up.

Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews we have a way solid 4.
