Everyone's always talking about how Pat White will be listed on the depth chart.

Why can't he just be listed as a WR? In other words, what won't he be able to do if he *is* listed as a WR? Ronnie is listed as a HB but that doesn't prevent him from taking snaps.

Wouldn't that get around the whole 2nd/3rd/emergency QB thing?

Isn't this explained like once a day?

Teams can choose to have 46 men dress out instead of 45 if they wish to have an "emergency QB" to hand out ice cream to everybody during the post game celebration. Otherwise, they are forced to hire another ball-boy whose sole job, despite his(or her) name, will be frozen dairy product handing-out instead of the normal ball-picker-upper role. This is why teams generally support the ice cream men in the stadiums and this helps to bring all the fans to the yard. Make sense?

So could you not designate, let's say...Patrick Turner (or anyone else who would otherwise be inactive) as the emergency QB, and dress your 46 instead of 45?

Designate Pat White as WR, and allow him to take snaps at any time?

yes and thats what they might do. Put him as a WR or anything else or maybe #2 QB. He cant be #3 QB to use him in the wildcat

From what I understand, the emergency QB does not count against active players on game day. Henne will only get in the game if Penny is injured but both White and Penny cannot return if Henne takes 1 snap under center.
In that case, Pat White can be listed as the 2nd QB and Henne as the emergency QB.

So dress 45 players with all three QBs active. This isn't that hard. We'll know what's up come Sunday when the inactives are known right before the game.

Each week, according to a league source, NFL officials are provided with a list of "bona fide quarterbacks," so that when teams submit their rosters 90 minutes prior to kickoff the officials can determine whether they're allowed the 46th player. The NFL monitors these lists and has the right to challenge a team on position designations if it thinks a team is trying to get away with something. The league can use a variety of methods, even including reviewing the team's practice tapes, to resolve disputes See http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/08/24/emergency-qb-rule-could-complicate-vick-pat-white-situations/

Simply listing him as a WR won't fly.

No one is answering the question in so many words! IF MIAMI CARRIES ALL 3 QBs on its 45 Man Roster, does the "3rd, Emergency QB" rule apply at all? There's no "46th Man" to cause problems/raise questions at all, so I would think that the rule would NOT apply. All MIAMI would have to do is de-activate one more player on its Roster to settle the whole matter completely and play whichever QB it wants at any time.

Anyone know for sure?

make White active and it doesn't matter what position he plays. he can also go in and out at any time.
the emergency QB rule alllows you to dress 46 and only use the 3rd QB if both other QB's are out of the game.

It's just a matter of taking out another position I think. If he's listing as the 3rd QB we get an extra guy, but he can't play until late in the game. If he is listed as anything else, we 'lose' a position. Might not be that big of a deal if our WR corp had more solid definite players on it, but we need all the guys to be available. So I see how it could be tricky. If he's listed as the #2 QB then Henne can't come in until late, and in the event CP went down (God help us all) White would be our only option unless Henne could finish the game.

I think.

It's this simple:

If Miami listed White as a 3rd string QB and one of the 45 players - rather than an emergency QB - he wouldn't have any of the emergency QB restrictions.

If, though, Miami wants that spot for someone who might contribute on special teams or defense - and designate White as the emergency QB - White would obviously have the appropriate restrictions.

So, you'd gain absolutely nothing by listing him as a WR.
