TEs are completely irrelevant in this offense? Going into the season some of us were scratching our heads over how many we kept: Gesicki, Smythe, Carter, Tanner Connor (whoever he is), Hunter Long and even Shaheen is on IR I think.

Yet, we don’t seem to have any plays for any of them / they don’t figure into our weekly game plans. Surely there have been teams we’ve played where featuring TEs would have been smart no?

Also, what’s up w Gesicki? I thought he was a pretty good weapon and wanted was happy we kept him for this year. Now he looks like a complete waste. He caught a ball in space last night and somehow managed to not gain another inch after he hauled it in. It was a “wow” play as in “wow, that’s pathetic”. Smythe had been improving as a receiver every year. This year he’s been best used to take direct snaps in short yardage.

Is it scheme, the players, both or what? I am really perplexed by this. Also, is Hunter along a bust?

I wonder the same thing. I believe 20 of 28 targets last night went to Hill / Waddle. Tua gets locked in on Hill constantly. We threw early to MOSTERT and it worked but we never went back to it. Our TE calls are sometimes bizarre like the one to Smythe four yds behind the LOS. I think a lot of this goes back to McD and his JV play calling. He’s impulsive and acts like a guy who has never called plays. He’s learning on the job to be a HC and a play caller. It’s a lot. He needs to step back and allow a play caller to take over next year. But he won’t.

Long is a bust. As in busted body. Can’t stay healthy…even in “walk-throughs.”

I have mentioned before where I think McD' scheme is more like McVay's

That said, I'd like to see Ingold used more in the short passing game.

Long may have some staying power
The more he gets used the better he looks at blocking
He just needs to stay healthy
McD doesn’t believe in throwing to TEs that much is clear

I think it's pretty simple. We need blocking TE's with our OL. This means fewer targets in the pass game. Additionally, good offenses make their money by getting the ball to their best playmakers. In the passing game, name any TE as effective as at least Sherfield.... I can't think of any. Gesicki gets the most targets since he is more of a WR anyway, but he really has performed poorly in the passing game, both with drops and with ability to get any distance or YAC.

Good take. Could very well be. Gesicki always looked like a top-heavy clod since he came into the league - he is a dork when he runs - that attempt at breaking a tackle was pathetic

To me, he started out as the biggest bust of our draft, then started to win me over before McDaniel. Unfortunately, that has pretty much evaporated now. You are correct in how he runs, he is truly the baby giraffe out there. McDaniel is a very aggressive play caller and runs a very aggressive offense. Gesicki just hasn't grown into the scheme or mindset to be a contributor.

I posted it on another thread. Something like 35 catches for 350 yds total from that TE unit over 14 games. That's beyond poor when you think we have Gesicki. Tua has thrown for 3238yds. 350yds to the whole of the TE unit. That's beyond poor. Might as well not have TEs if that's their output.

A George kittle type would probably go a long way for this offense

I’m not counting on Hunter Long turning into that

Michael Mayer isn’t happening but would be amazing.

Gotta hope for someone in the draft, Georgia or Ohio State’s dudes. Others out there too I’ve seen talked about in the draft forum. Utah’s TE I think too is intriguing

Tua runs the offense, and from Bama he is familiar with receivers running into open spots. He runs that offense. I have no problem with that.
We need agile TEs and who can block.

10.9M down the drain. That’s a cap killer, along with most of the deals we’ve handed out.

Time to phase Gesicki out of the offense since he won’t be here next year.

Someone else needs to be making contract decisions moving forward.

We’re paying way too much money out for a team that only really needs about 6-7 players from the current roster and 3 of them are on rookie deals. Tua, Waddle and Phillips.
