Can Tua's Contract Be Renegotiated?

Just tell him he's a 3rd stringer on this team moving forward, and if he doesn't like that. He can get his agent to make a trade or retire. Dolphins shouldn't cut him. That's exactly what he wants.
Why would Tua retire and leave $ on the table?

Now factor in the injury guarantee in Tua's contract.

Keeping him on the roster would be risky.

If you can find a trade then great but you’re going to have to eat the majority of the guarantees in that scenario. If not, then cut his ass and take the hit. We shouldn’t even be looking at who available FAs are this year anyway. We should cut Tua and Austin Jackson, try trading Chubb, Minkah, and Waddle.

Build through the draft and clear the books to supplement the roster in FA once you have your QB on a rookie contract.

Because he might not want to be embarrassed as a third string QB for the rest of his career answering questions from the media daily? He's already made enough money playing, and he can do other things he enjoys doing. Perhaps get a job and make money commentating.

How's is he going to get injured not playing and playing in a 3rd string red QB jersey practicing?

QUESTION: Is it possible that Tua's contract can be renegotiated to facilitate a trade since his recent comment indicates that he is good with moving on to another team? I think many teams won't consider him because of that contract.

If it is possible, I wonder if he'd be willing to do it.? Seems like it would be to his advantage to do so if it helps him get to another team.

Thank you.
Anything is possible.

Geeze, this sucks, Google Gemini spit this out when I asked: "what is the most likely way to cut tua from the Miami Dolphins"

I mean, I thought the the Post-June 1st 2026 cut would be the answer, but look at the cap hit, WOW. CAP MAXIMUM. $304,300,000. The hit would be 67.4 million, that's 22 percent. 😡 We save 11 million to keep him on the bench in 2026, but if he is not going to play, I say cut him this June!

Options for the Dolphins in 2026
Moving on from Tagovailoa is complicated by the four-year, $212.1 million extension he signed in July 2024, which includes $54 million in fully guaranteed money for the 2026 season.
  • Trade (Most Likely Ideal Scenario):This is the Dolphins' preferred option.
    • Mechanism: Miami would find a team in need of a bridge quarterback and agree to pay a portion of Tagovailoa's guaranteed money to entice a deal.
    • Financial Impact: A pre-June 1 trade would save the Dolphins $11.2 million in cap space but result in a massive $45.2 million dead cap hit. A post-June 1 trade would clear more space but complicate their offseason timeline.
  • Post-June 1 Cut (Most Likely Practical Scenario):An outright release is the most discussed alternative if a trade partner cannot be found.
    • Mechanism: The Dolphins would release him after June 1 to spread the significant dead cap hit across two seasons, a strategy similar to the Broncos' release of Russell Wilson.
    • Financial Impact: This would result in a dead cap hit of $67.4 million in 2026, followed by another $31.8 million in 2027.
  • Keep Him as a Backup (Possible but Unlikely):Miami could theoretically keep Tagovailoa as a very expensive backup quarterback, as his guaranteed salary makes cutting him costly.
    • Mechanism: He would compete for the starting job or sit behind rookie Quinn Ewers, who replaced him as the starter late in the 2025 season.
    • Financial Impact: His cap hit would be $56.4 million in 2026 if he stays on the roster.

Are you considering the financial ramifications? Or is this just emotional opinions on individual players?

I ask because I don't really see any tangible benefit of cutting AJ or trading Waddle at this point.

Fantasy, IMO.

If he's cut, he still gets paid, and isn't a 3rd string QB.

Yep, cut him in June and unload Waddle for picks, Chubb and Minkah will be sticking around.

post June 1st cut is the most viable option

unless the new GM feels like trading Tua AND an asset

I think aj is one year away and the last thing I want to do is start this rebuild with a right tackle top 12 pick.
