Heading into the meeting, the Browns had their focus on a three-year deal, while Anderson's agents were still interested in exploring a six-year alternative. They also had substantial ground to make up on the financial terms. But Savage said Thursday that he's still optimistic an agreement can be reached by Feb. 28, when the Browns would have to make Anderson a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent.

The key for Anderson's camp will be determining what market exists. Teams with quarterback issues includes the Dolphins, Jets, Falcons, Ravens, Chiefs and Bears. If someone is willing to offer Anderson a lucrative long-term deal, he might not rush to sign the Browns' three-year offer.

Picking up Anderson and not having to give a signal pick for him would be great. To my knowledge the guy was not given a Tender or Tag so now the Brown have until the start of Free Agency to try and sign the guy. If they dont I think we come in a offer a contract with a poison pill to it. What do you guy think, again this is all me speculating

He is a Restricted Free Agent.....so they did not need to franchise him.

the deadline to tender RFA's has not passed yet (not sure exactly when that it). The will undoubtedly tender him at the highest level and the compensation will be a 1st and a 3rd.

EDIT - If I had read the article first, I would have seen that the deadline is Feb 28th.

It will be something interesting to follow, and hopefully the kid doesnot get Tagged

I'm not sold on Anderson. Plus that would screw up any leverage we would have in making the league think we're drafting Ryan.

You're original post was right that he was not tagged. That deadline was yesterday. The only thing that remains to be seen by 28 Feb is what level they tender him at as a RFA. Probably a mute point though because most media reports say they are close to a long term deal with him.

they can't offer him a long term deal cuz they have brady quinn making a huge amount of money. why would he sign a three year deal when he can get 6 years for 60 million from some other team.

Quinn was draft at #22....he's not making that much money. probably right around the average for NFL backup QB's. still, the Browns are smart to only offer a 3 yr deal, as it would give them far greater flexibility.

Anderson would consider the offer, because the 6yr $60 million contract you allude to, wouldn't be available till after next season (unless some team is crazy enough to give up a 1 and a 3)....and he would have to play even better next year to warrant it. As many point out, he's only done it one year, and he would have to have supreme confidence to pass up this offer and plan on being worth more next year.

it's a classic case of 'deal or no deal'.....turn down a ton of money and keep playing for the jackpot, or take the decent offer in front of you.

The Browns are in a really bad spot right now. They obvioulsy want to keep Anderson to see if he's for real or last year was a fluke. But they only want to give him a shorter contract, in case it was a fluke. And also because signing a long-term deal basically says to Quinn, you are going to be a back-up for a long time or you might have to go elsewhere. If he is put at the highest RFA level, I don't think any team is going to give up a 1st & 3rd for him. But a long-term deal? What kind of message does that send to me if I'm Brady Quinn ?

i think quinn signed a pretty huge contract regardless of falling to 22. i think he signed a contract in the twenty something million range

someone will pay big time money for derek anderson considering how pathetic the qb free agent class is. the browns can't afford both players
