One thing about the NFL, post salary-cap, is that anything is possible. I'm an optimist at heart anyway and I like what I see from this team in so many ways. The Dolphins competed hard despite some obvious weaknesses. What happens when those holes are filled? Speaking of holes, I see seven in no particular order:

* #1 wide receiver
* Strong-side linebacker
* 2 middle linebackers (not a fan of Crowder)
* Playmaker at safety
* TE upgrade over Fasano
* Nose Tackle

The question is whether Miami can fill most of those needs in one offseason. I don't think they necessarily need to fill all of those to compete, as we've seen teams with glaring holes in the Super Bowl in recent years. I think they can do it. The last two drafts have produced six starters (eight if you include Bess and Carpenter as college free agents) or roughly three per year. If the front office can duplicate that and come up with three upgrades in free agency we are there. Plus, there are young players who still could develop into starting roles such as Clemens and Hartline, maybe even Merling.

This team is so young that it will be tough to make a run even if the players are in place, but it is possible. And that's why this is such an exciting offseason to be a Dolphins fan.

* #1 wide receiver - Dez Bryant or another Bryant

* Strong-side linebacker - 2nd round

* 2 middle linebackers (not a fan of Crowder) - Carlos Dansby Crowder is no star but he is a starter

* Playmaker at safety - Ryan Clark not a super star but a true FS

* TE upgrade over Fasano - Resign Fasano and get a guy that is more of a pass catcher David Martins role last year and we are good

* Nose Tackle - Casey Hampton (1 or 2 years left in the tank)

and with the rest of the draft pick hope we get something special in the later rounds 3rd- 7th at those positions

Not saying all these thing will happen

but you asked if we can put it together in one offseason and like this we can

I think we can! What we need to do this year is get the Top Tier Free Agents, not the Second Tier guys, Diamonds In The Rough, or Players out of position. We pick up Wilfork and Dansby everyone on our defense just got WAAAAAAY better! The double team Wilfork would face on every down would open things up for both ends, and allow Dansby to dominate the middle, and Chrowder might actually make a play in the back field. I would still draft McClain if he is there then ship Crowder off!

Fasano is a productive Tight End, Sperry looks like he has potential and plays well on ST. I would bring Dave Martin to camp and see what he has left in the tank, the guy really works the seam routes and middle well.

Wide Receiver upgrades are going to be the tough one and really depend on what happens with the CBA. If there is no CBA, I think our best shot at a upgrade will come from a Vet that a team unloads to clear up contracts. Someone like Steve Smith from Carolina, he can come in and dominate for another 2 years will we develop a draft pick. MAybe Marty Gilyard from Cincy in the second round and watch him explode as the next DeSaun Jackson!

We need all of the above, but, are we going to have to start all over again learning a new D?

Just get 1 MLB, 1 FS, and 1 WR and this team would be so much better. You could really point to those 3 positions and say they are what lost us some games. With better players at those three spots or hell even just a great FS and we probably win 9-10 games.

That's not an unrealistic offseason either IMO. I do think they can upgrade Crowder down the road. He's not terrible, he's just not a guy who can help at all in the passing game (either in coverage, or rushing the passer).

I think the front office will sign one top tier top free agent, maybe two. There could be some money if Chad Pennington is not resigned and certainly the Ronnie Brown situation bears watching. I really like Marty Gilyard as well.

That's true, especially if at least one is a real impact player. Lots of good FS in the draft so we could be in a good spot there.

I don't think so. The FO seem committed to the draft and developing players, while picking up good value FA's, rather than spending the big bucks to get the best available. But we are on the right road. I think the big thing will be having our best players available all season or the majority of them anyway. We lost too many key players to injuries last season to remain competitive at the end of the season.

I'm hoping for an improved team next season no doubt, but I dont see us being the finished product until the season after.

Yeah it's not impossible

and Crowder can hold us over until we find an upgrade I believe

By my count WILSON cost us 5-6 games almost singlehandedly. Replace him w/a topshelf FS and a 7-9 team looks more like 12-4 or even 13-3...without much else being done.

FASANO is strictly a mediocre, 2nd team TE. If we had a topshelf TE, like SHOCKEY on the SAINTS, we would have at least won the ATLANTA game for sure. I/m/o, having a topshelf TE would do more for MIAMI than having a "big, #1 WR". After all, look at the SAINTS! They have SHOCKEY, but NOT a TO, or a MOSS, or a FITZGERALD, or any of those certain similar big, fast WRs playing for DENVER, DALLAS, and SD that get discussed here and elsewhere in the DOLPHINS' universe. Look at what the SAINTS have done this year, w/SHOCKEY and w/o him.

ILB needs help, BIGTIME: CROWDER is solid, but he's more like a "best supporting Actor" than a "leading man". The problem is MIAMI DOESN'T HAVE a "leading man". PARCELLS knows it, too. On his great NY GIANTS team, he had G REASONS as "best supporting actor": but he also had "PEPPER JOHNSON" as his "leading man". The difference, i/m/o, is absolutely mind-boggling. CROWDER could use some help. AYODELE is strictly a back-up, and TORBOR, who made his name w/the GIANTS AS AN OLB AND NOT AN ILB, is still learning, just as CROWDER had to do--and it takes time. So, I'd draft McCLAIN, and I'd be willing to trade up to get him. And I'd look around for ANOTHER ILB as well.

NT is a big need only if FERGUSON doesn't make it back. If he does, then MIAMI's in a position to say "yes" or "no".

Beyond that, I see NO OTHER REAL NEEDS. Do all 4, and get our own people re-signed and healthy, and this team WILL indeed contend...for the SB, not just for a playoffs wild card.

Good points. I remember also in the Indy game that Fasano should have caught a Chad Pennington pass that might have made a difference in that game as well. In this offense a top tight end would mean so much. Honestly, I'd like to see two ballhawking safeties, but I think this front office would put a higher priority on an enforcer such as Taylor Mays. We'll see.

I really hope so. Time is running out. I really want to know what it feels like to win a Super Bowl before we all die in 2 years
