I was thinking and I know we all want to judge every candidate as a good or a bad hire. But has anybody consistently correctly predicted whether a coach would be good or bad? Doug Pederson was considered a terrible hire who they just happened to settle for but he was the only good hire that year.Gase was considered a hot candidate but failed. Does anybody feel like they can correctly tell if a first time coach is good? If so, what qualities do you look for? Personally I think its a crapshoot so no matter who we hire I can not get excited or upset. Time will tell

To put it simply, No.

Reality is, many first time guys are in very bad situations, where management, unrealistically, expects immediate results.

Yeah I poked fun at my buddy who’s a die hard Eagles fan when they hired Peterson and we got Gase. He was jealous.

He’s not jealous anymore.
Pederson looks like a fantastic hire. Even this year, they looked out of it early then keeps back into the playoffs

Of course not.

You can control your due diligence, and some strong indicators to help predict or project but

I'd say a man who's 50+ years old and has never been a HC at least at the college level

is probably someone with less than a burning desire to be a HC.

For me, that would be a concern.

In addition, anyone who's "success" has always come when surrounded by superior talent and/or resources

is less impressive than someone (for example) JJ way back at OK State where he kicked some ask consistently

against supposedly much better programs with "bigger names."

Bottom line -- find a dude who gets the most out of his talent and tends to "out coach" his opposition

more than he gets used and abused.

A little OT, but last I checked, some virgin candidates are getting more interviews than the vets. After all these years there are still teams chasing buzz.
That said, as someone has said, there are VERY few good HCs and everyone wants the next one. No one knows. Keep trying til they 'hit'

I've been on record calling for an experienced head coach, but the more I come to accept that Miami is about to go into a decade long losing process of less than 5 wins per year the more I realize it doesn't matter who they hire. This coach will be the first jockey during the dark ages not the one that brings the team back into the light.

If we hire a new head coach, the main thing I think you have to look for is improvement from year to year. Are we getting better in all areas of the game? A good head coach is not just and offensive or defensive guru or a QB whisperer. We aren't paying him to be that. We pay coordinators and position coaches to do that. His job is the overall well being of the team.

You can never tell if a coach will work out. However, I think having people higher up that are able to do their research and due diligence can at least pick a decent candidate. It's also about more than the coach. Having the GM that can properly pick players that will be best useful for the team and the coach/coaches. Think about some of the great teams. There's the patriots with the "patriot way". The Steelers have their certain way about doing things. And then there's the Colts that were lucky to have Peyton Manning. Would Tony Dungy have been a good coach without Peyton Manning? We will never know. I think we need a head coach that doesn't focus on playcalling but rather focusing on building a team. Someone that make smart decisions consistently like managing the clock, knowing when the game is on the line and playing conservative does the team know good. Kind of like when we played Indianapolis this year. We don't need a genius just someone that can make sure we don't screw up the little things.

Most first time HC's are going to a bad situation. If the situation was good there would be no opening. For the most part that HC needs to put a good staff together and a good roster. It helps when you get a good QB that can help you win games. Doesn't matter who we get, half the board will hate the pick and the other half would be totally happy. Time will tell if we hired the right guy or not.

Yes, they need to have a great quarterback, and a great defensive coach.

Ya know the truth is there are so many different styles and types of dudes that have proven to be really good HCs

but I think someone who can set expectations and formulate a winning atmosphere is essential. That starts with

leadership and gaining the respect/credibility of the players -- even if you start out losing -- a good leader can

manage that process and keep guiding the team positively towards the stated goal -- winning games

consistently and competing for and winning championships.

From Lombardi to Shula to Walsh to (excluding proven cheaters) it has to start with leadership and

then smarts -- the HC has to bring something to the table of high value that overlays on the entire team...

That said, a great OC or DC are not necessarily your best bet. It just depends on their ability to elevate

as THE MAN.

Interesting fact IMO -- Shula defined his role as to coach the assistants -- in other words to LEAD

from top down so that his stamp was on every part of the team. But of course -- I seriously doubt

he had much "coaching" to do with Arns!

Dingy was pretty successful with TB, before the Colts, IMO. He made playoffs, and won a division championship.

It was his defense, that carried Gruden to the SB.
