League sources tell NFL.com's Jason La Canfora the Colts actually have until Sunday to make a final decision on whether or not to release Peyton Manning.
A decision on Manning's $28 million option bonus is due by Thursday, but La Canfora reports the Colts could "do as little by Thursday as notifying (Manning) they do not plan to pick up that option." They would then have until Sunday, two days before the start of the new league year, to work on a restructured contract. Mar 6 - 8:42 AM

Relax, even if he is released don't think we can sign him until free agency starts on March 13th.

Released means free agent. The big splash will happen next tuesday.

Not true. If he is released he can sign with another team right away. You don't have to wait like a free agent does. The Raiders cornerback who was released about a month ago already signed with the Chiefs.

If the Colts tell Peyton they aren't going to resign him, his agent will promptly tell the media to get people's checkbooks lined up and talks will be over. There is no incentive for Manning to restart talks after a public decision has been made.

La Confora is spectacular at getting his name out there, but I learned long ago that absolutely nothing he says is interesting...and if it IS interesting, then it is false.

He's right and wrong. Yes they have until Sunday but they would actually have to do it by Friday at 4:00 when the league office close. If he's still on their roster at 4:01 friday, he'll still be on their roster Monday morning which would mean they'd have to pay him the bonus

I stand corrected then.

Correct. We'll know by Friday afternoon.

We will know...when and if he´s cut. But PM signing with another team, including the fins, might take looooong and sleeeeepless days. Just the complication of the incentive-driven contract, and the fact that Tom Condon is his agent, is enough to know that it will probably be one of the(if not THE) most complex contracts in NFL history...
