Cap Confusion?- Here's Some Help...Hopefully

You're welcome, Rebar!

Truth be told I only have the basics on this and am still learning. I am very glad that there are some other people out there that enjoy figuring out the details of the cap as it just gets way too much for me!

Franchise/transition numbers
Thursday is the deadline for NFL teams to designate players as "franchise" or "transition" free agents. Here is a look at the qualifying offers for each category at every position:
Pos. Franchise Transition
QB $7,446,000 $6,280,000
DE $5,699,000 $4,975,000
RB $5,600,000 $4,703,000
LB $5,515,000 $4,573,000
DT $5,028,000 $4,110,000
OL $4,920,000 $4,442,000
CB $4,493,000 $4,077,000
WR $4,303,000 $3,906,000
S $3,342,000 $2,926,000
TE $2,288,000 $2,070,000
K/P $1,241,000 $1,129,000

FYI- Franchise/Transition Tags 101...

Franchise players must be offered a minimum of the average of the top-five
salaries at their position or a 20-percent salary increase, whichever is
greater. But the original club can match any offer and retain the player, or
receive two first-round draft choices as compensation if it decides not to
match.

To designate a transition player, a club must offer a minimum of the
average of the top-10 salaries at the player's position last season or a
20-percent salary increase, whichever is greater.
The original club has the 1st refusal right to match an offer by another club.
As Thurs. is the deadline..... Any guess who ours will be?

I haven't heard any buzz about any of the 'Fins getting either the transition or franchise tag. I believe the 'Fins are going to be too worried about dumping salary to try to retain any potential high priced free agents. In fact, the only player I can see that's worth either of those tags is Marion and everything I've heard points to the 'Fins just allowing him to hit the market like he did last year and hope he finds his way back to South Florida.

Marion is not a FA at this point so we cannot tag him and $3,342,000 or $2,926,000 is too much for us anyway

Wasn't Marion signed to just a one year contract last season? Maybe I'm mistaken. And I agree that the 'Fins couldn't afford that kind of money on a safety anyway.

He was signed to a 2 year, 6 million dollar contract. In his first year, he was slated to make 2 million, but in the second, he is due a 2 million dollar bonus on March 1st (I think that is the right date.) That bonus goes against the cap. He is also slated to make 2 million dollars this year on top of that.

Thanks, I was misinformed. Maybe I was thinking free agency because he's likely not going to be back with the team next year.
