I believe now that He dosen't Have The Dictator Saban over his shoulder and controlling every aspect of the team, Capers will be able to show that he is the best Defensive Coordinator in football.

Some might have already believed that including myself, But This year I think Our Defense is going to be even better than last and I believe that Capers is going to really use his great Defensive mind and bring out the Most of this "Soon to be the best" Defense in the NFL.

i Think he is top five,
IMO dick lebeau is the best,,,,if you notice the names change but the steelers D is always one of the best,i watched a special on him a while back,,basically every player that plays for him would kill for him.

Leabeau is good but honestly id have to go Rex Ryan as the number 1 D Coord

It is very subjective to say he or any other DC is for certain the best. I would place him probably in the top 4-5 with guys like Gregg Williams, Dick LeBeau, Jim Johnson and Monte Kiffin. The Ryan twins are pretty good too. Dom certainly doesn't take a back seat to any of them, but I would not say he is leaving them in the dust either. :)

Yeah agreed, I just think it's going to be sweet to watch Dom run this D on his own without Satan over his shoulder...

Yeah lets not forget something really important,,,,,,with joey here now we probably won't be seeing that animal of a blitzer,,,MR ZACH THOMAS BABY,COMIN STRONG UP THE MIDDLE HEAD DOWN,EXPLODING RIGHT INTO THE CHEST OF THE FIRST OFFENSIVE LINEMAN HE SEES!! LOL,,,I STILL LOVE YOU ZACH,,,JUST JOKES BABY

I wonder what Capers will do with Porter and Taylor now. what he did with Taylor was amazing, he was never in the same spot on the field twice in a row. we are sure to create nightmares for opposing offenses. we should really use press coverage because WRs have to get open fast on us now

Good thread, while I agree Dom is one of the best, probably top 5, a lot of it has to do with personnel and the Fins haven't exactly been a drafting machine the last 5 years. Porter is a great addition, and I am more excited than ever about our D for next year. As much as I hate satan, I suspect Dom may have picked up a diddy or two from him as well and can't imagine Capers being less for the experience.

Im right there with ya...But, I hope it isnt the other way around and Saban made Capers better instead of Capers making Saban better...

What am I thinking. Terry probably told Saban she was going to be calling in the plays from her cage through the mocrophone on her collar on game day

I agree with ya. I wonder how many false starts they are going to produce this year?

BTW nice baseball team your rooting for PhinsRock.

Is Capers really this good? I don't ever really remember the Texans having an above average defense under him. Our defense last season was great but I thought that was due to Saban's system and excellent veteran play. I thought Capers was a special assistant to Saban and Saban ran most of the defense. I'm not trying to take anything from Capers but what has he done to be considered the best in the league?

I just hope we get this offense going and soon!!!

It would be shame to have one of the best D's in the league for the few years and have nothing to show for it.

Dom Capers is brilliant. In a 1999, Pro Football Weekly asked its panel of NFL insiders to name the best defensive coordinator in the league.

Here is a summary of their responses, which were made anonymously:

1. Bill Belichick, Jets – 'He won two games for the Jets this year with his game plans. Almost always seems to be one step ahead of the game and rarely shows you the same thing. Gets into quarterbacks' and offensive coordinators' heads. Hard to read and harder to beat. Now that Fritz (Shurmur) is gone, (the title of best defensive coordinator) is between 'Little Bill' and Dom Capers."

2. Dom Capers, Jaguars  "Look what he has done with the Jaguars’ defense. Look what he did with the Steelers’ defense. The master of the zone blitz. Nobody is more meticulous, and it pays off."

3. Monte Kiffin, Buccaneers  "Never has gotten the credit he so richly deserves. His game plan against the Seahawks (in Week 12) was a masterpiece."

4. Dave McGinnis, Cardinals  "Good all-around coach. Good (with) X’s and O’s and (has) good people skills."

5. John Fox, Giants  "Does a really nice job of developing players and fitting them into his defense. Sets the tempo for his players, and they seem to respond to him."

Things have changed since then, but it's fair to say Capers has been widely recognized as one of the best in the business for years now. Matter of fact, his impressive work with the expansion Panthers - including that defense that had Sam Mills, Kevin Greene, Eric Davis, and Lamar Lathon among other leading the charge - got him that job as HC of the expansion Texans.

One could argue that retaining him as defensive coordinator was just as important as the Joey Porter signing.

Very good point. Here's a cautionary tale about thinking that the DC of a defensive-minded HC is quite as good as advertised:

When Gregg Williams was Buffalo HC, Jerry Gray was the DC and Dick LeBeau was a "defensive consultant" (2003), and the Bills D was awesome. For most of the season they were holding opponents to 12 or fewer points per game (and needing to, because the offense couldn't score!). Well, when Williams left for DC and LeBeau for Pitt, Jerry Gray was the hottest coaching commodity out there. Gray should have left in 2003, or at the latest, 2004 when the first cracks in his reputation as a great DC appeared, because the wheels fell off the Bills' D in '05 and where is Gray now? He's a DB coach somewhere.
