Dom Capers led us to having the 4th best defense in the league last year and on paper, the defense is just as good or even better this year. My question is, come January when head coaching jobs open up, will Capers get a call if we have a top 5(very likely) defense this upcoming season?

One thing working against him is that teams seem to be going on a "young" wave when it comes to hiring coaches. Also, he has had two head coaching jobs and both yielded mediocre results. Capers did interview for the Bills job in 2006 and interviewed for the Dolphins job earlier this season. Other then that, no other teams gave him a call last offseason and this offseason. Though, this board and other Dolphin fans would get nervous whenever a head coaching job would open up this past offseason.

I hope that no teams come calling after this season. However, even though he didn't do well at his first two head coaching job, you can't ignore the fact that he will likely have two straight years of a top 5 defense.

So, do you think teams will think about giving Capers a third head coaching chance? Or do you think we might be able to hold onto one of the best(if not the best) defensive coordinator in the league for a few more years?

I voted no, but he would be interviewed. He did well with the panthers so you never know.

It's highly doubtful. Capers isn't a dumb guy. You know how the saying goes fool me once foo me twice blah blah.... Bottomline he knows he's at his best as a DC. And with his whopping contract extension he got this offseason he won't be worried about getting more cash. Remember he's the highest paid assistant in the NFL.

Edit- Here's a link to show that- http://blog.washingtonpost.com/nflinsider/2007/01/dolphins_keep_capers_as_defens.html

True, but don't forget that the Dolphins laid out the new contract and he waited a few weeks to sign it because there were some head coaching jobs still open. I am sure he enjoys being the highest paid assistant and coaching a top 5 defense, but I am also sure he wants to be a head coach again.

How could you be so sure after the terrible seasons he had down in Houston? I don't see him getting in over his head again.

No cause he's already been a 2 time coach. They rarely give coaches a 3rd try after being fired twice unless it's a cheap hire while waiting for a better coach to come along ala Norv/Wade. However, since Miami's paying him over $2 million a year I can't see it at his age.

Capers is a heck of a defensive coord but he's no head coach as people have seen. He just can't operate an offense and manage an entire team. However, if our defense plays phenomenally and is in top 5 in sacks, interceptions, yards, and points allowed, he may have a shot at a job.

didn't the dolphins pay him head coach salary also?

He will probably be offered another job. Say a team with a strong offense needs a new coach (Lions, Panthers). Why not give him a shot? Wade Phillips got another chance.

I voted "no", a great Defensive Coordinator who isn't a great Head Coach. He does have alot of guts, he took over two expansion franchises even though expansion teams generally are the end of a Head Coach's career.

It will depend how well the dolphins win this year. If this is the rebuilding year that it appears to be then my vote is no. There is a good chance the defense might be on the field too long this year to stay in the top five as the offense might take some time to get in sync. Anyway heres hoping I am wrong!

I think teams are going to be a little hesitant about hiring Capers as a HC again. I think another year or 2 will have to pass before teams start to look at him again. (Crosses fingers)

If there are teams dumb enough to hire Wade Philips and Norv Turner, then yes, Dom will get another shot.
