Just saw on ESPN that Capers has signed a 3 year extension.

Yes!! Great news. I was scared were going to lose him...

Also, he's going to be the highest paid assistant in the NFL:

Capers' new deal is for three years and an estimated $8.1 million, team sources confirmed. His salary in 2007 will be $2.6 million, equal to that of Washington Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams, but Capers will get raises of at least $100,000 per year in 2008 and 2009.

[ESPN] The Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement with their defensive coordinator Dom Capers on a deal that will make him the highest-paid assistant coach in the NFL, team sources confirmed with ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Sources say Capers' new deal is for three years and an estimated $8.1 million. His salary in 2007 will be $2.6 million, equal to that of Washington Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams, but Capers will get raises of at least $100,000 per year in 2008 and 2009.

Capers' current deal was set to expire on Sunday; he would have been able to talk with other teams, but he would not have been able to sign with another team until Feb. 1.

Which means we can pretty well eliminate any defensive-minded coaches from the hunt.

Great News Capers will Defiinatly stay!

heres the link says its a three year deal worth 8.1 millon and makes him the highest paid assitant in the NFL.

This is great to know we will have a lil continuity around next season....by the way does this mean the list is wrong with the five canidates?

Wow! Looks like they already have the HC picked out as well if they are signing Capers to a 3 year deal. They must be hiring a coach that want's to keep Capers in place as well. And it's got to be an offensive minded guy for Capers to get that kind of money. Or perhaps Mueller is running the ship now? Either way very good news! Happy to hear this!

I think you made a very good point. I can't see the logic of extending an assistant unless you are fairly certain that the new HC wanted him on board. You couldn't possibly know that unless you had a good idea who the HC was going to be.

Why does it have to be an offensive minded guy? Mike Tomlin is a defensive minded coach, but he has proven to be very adaptable to the talent that is on the team. He comes from the Tampa 2 background, but he didn't use the Tampa 2 much in Minnesota. Let's not forget that Mike Tomlin interviewed for the defensive coordinator position here in 2005 and impressed the hierarchy of the Dolphins at that time with his innovative ideas.

The fact is, there are currently only two coaches that reports have confirmed will be coming in for second interviews. Mike Tomlin and Brian Schottenheimer. Just because Dom Capers is being kept on doesn't mean that the head coach has to be offensive minded.

What I hope is that Dom Capers doesn't try to change the defense into the straight up 3-4 formation he has always run.
