Its for how many years they have been captain
.
The season’s biggest uniform change will be apparent before the game even starts, when the captains meet at the center of the field for the coin toss. That’s because team captains this year will be wearing a special captain’s patch on the upper-right chest area… The patches will be color-coordinated to match each jersey, and the gold star underneath the “C” marks the number of years that the player has been a captain under the league’s new captaincy initiative

Saw some on ebay for 12.oo,yeah when you are a Cap for five years you will have 5 stars. I want one that has 5 if I by one.

Those patches are so hideous. Do we really need to know who the Captains are? Are their teammates going to forget who their captains are if they don't see that ridiculous patch?

I think it is for the fan's sake more than anything. Lets everyone know who is the each team's leaders are.

seriously. and the offensive captian is always the qb. seems pointless.

It's probably for the refs. I think that only the captains can accept/decline penalties. I think if their is some sort of discussion about a call or replay, then the refs relay to the captains.

probably... because you know everytime there's a questionable call the refs are surrounded by 22 guys who are all talking to them at the same time, it's faster and easier for them to identify the captains... but i must agree they are ugly as hell
