Lifelong South Florida resident Vernon Carey is proud to admit he has always been a Dolphins fan. But that doesn't mean the Dolphins' starting tackle plans to end his career with his hometown team.

Even though there's plenty of salary-cap space to get a deal done, the Dolphins have not approached Carey or his agent about renegotiating his contract. And that doesn't bother the former first-round pick one bit.

In fact, the 27-year-old from the University of Miami seems intrigued about the prospects of hitting the open market in 2009.

"It doesn't matter," Carey said when asked about pursuing a new deal. "That's not important to me right now. What's important to me is winning. I want to be part of a winning team. Winning!

"Of course I'd love to stay here. I'm from Miami and love the Dolphins. I admit I think about it, but I don't like to think about [my contract] because I can't control it. That's out of my hands. It's in [managements] hands. All I want to do is win."

Next March is a loooooooong time away from now, but I think not trying to extend Carey now is a mistake. I will be very sad if Carey is with a new team in 2009. :(

we could always tag him.

I think he will get his contract with Ricky being the franchise player. I have no problem with the team making him earn his contract.

Trust me Carey is the most solid OL we have.. Bill will give him his $$$ he just has to prove himself.

I wont be, because that means that he sucked, and the Phins will be better off without him in 09

I love the fact that Parcells and Ireland aren't giving undeserving players new deals. If the guys on this team dont prove themselves to the new guys, then they're gone

and if they do, they'll extend them, its as simple as that

So would I, but it looks as if this regime is pretty much in a "show me, before I pay you" mode. Still, I think Vernon deserves to be paid. Maybe in midseason negotiations will pick up.
I was thinking the exact same thing

I wouldn't call Vernon Carey undeserving, that's not fair. He has definitely earned the right to ask for a new deal. He's played four years without a peep about his contract.

But the reality is I'm sure the Dolphins have their eyes on Jordan Gross over in Carolina. He's been playing under Maser and Henning for a long time, and right now until Vernon Carey plays under those two and they reach the same or better comfort level with him, they would probably prefer the more familiar player. They may look to pull a swap of the two players next year.

why would carolina be interested in swapping gross for carey ... both are good players but gross is the better one... you think we'd give something extra or a str8 up player for player trade ?

They're both set to be free agents next year. Gross was already a free agent this year but he got the franchise tag. Supposedly, much like Carey, Gross has said that he won't be signing any extensions. So, we could run into a situation where both players get the franchise tag, and the Panthers want to get beefier on the OL while the Dolphins prefer Gross.

Imo Carey is a solid player and worth the money, however we might feel the need to spend that money for a different position and parcells & Co. might know a cheaper RT that could do well for us.

After a 1-15 season they ("The Regime") have a pretty argumemt to have that mindset. You can be sure that Carey will get paid if he produces. Sounds like he has the right attitude. Now let's hope that translates to wins on the field.
