Dolphins | Carey to Replace McDougle at Right Tackle?
Wed, 19 Oct 2005 14:34:31 -0700

Miami Dolphins head coach Nick Saban said OT Vernon Carey could be on the verge of replacing starting OT Stockar McDougle heading into Week 7 due to McDougle's penchant for penalties. McDougle was called for five infractions during Week 6, two of which were declined.

please!!!!!! McDougles penalties are pissing me off so much! hes had 5 false starts this year already, and given up 3 sacks already. last year he only had 3 false starts and gave up only 4 sacks all year!

carey has 1 false start and 1 sack given up.......why is he not playing again?

hopefully, and let me add that I am EXTREMELY glad Saban only signed Stockar to a 1 year deal. This way, next offseason we can wash our hands clean of him and not have any cap blemishes

It seemed to me that Carey was playing better than McDougal anyway.

good point. i hope we use some of that huge cap room to finally sign a great OLineman instead of passing like we have year after year...

Well it's about time. I didn't see Carey get picked with the 19th overall pick to just sit on the bench the whole season. Even if our line is rotting with him, it's also rotting without him. We might as well just keep him in until someone else can significantly make a difference over him, and Stockar McDougle is not that guy.

We are having more success running the ball when Stockar has been in the game. Though I'm not sure you can attribute that to him. I'd rather see Vernon in there personally.

yea carey has struggled in run blocking since we drafted him...but if we are going to throw the ball 40 times why we worried bout that

Carey has the opportunity to be a part of the future of this football team. Stockar will most likely be gone next year. Finding out as much as we can about Vernon Carey will make it a whole lot easier to address our offensive line situation in the offseason.

True enough, but I'm hoping not to see a repeat of that every week. At least until we get a more accurate QB.

Me too....

I think they need to consider stopping alll of the flip-flopping on the OL. It's week 7 already, and we still don't seem to know what we have at OT....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

The reason that Carey is not playing is because of his run blocking. He just goes through the motions but doesnt actually try.

Think about it. All last year Carey barely gave up any sacks and same this year yet he is on the bench. That just leaves run blocking. The funny thing is when he came into the league last year people said he would be very good run blocking but his pass blocking is the problem.

I'll take a very good pass blocker who doesn't commit many penalties over what McDougle is doing right now. Only way Carey can get better with run blocking is to be out there and keep on him.

We're averaging about 3.7 ypc behind the right side of the OL with Stockar in. During the first three games in the first half when Carey was in at RT we averaged about 3.0 ypc behind the right side. But, that could be shortchanging Carey because Carey did come back and block on the left side in the second half of those games and I have no way of tallying what we averaged to the left with him in at LT without actually referring to the tapes.

Also you should keep in mind that it could be that the Dolphins OL gets better in the second half and it might have nothing to do with Carey...because all around the OL has much better ypc in the second half of games than in the first half so again Carey's 3.0 ypc stat could be skewed that way.

I've wanted Vernon Carey in the starting lineup since back in Training Camp... hell I wanted both Carey and McDougle in the starting lineup but McDougle has been a major disappointment. I'm not sure if it's a good idea if we keep switching or rotating tackles but I am excited if Carey is going to replace McDougle at Right Tackle, I just hope he's able to perform well enough to keep and secure the starting job.
