Practice Squad
First off, let me start by saying I live near Kansas City and I am fully aware of Carl's impact on the Chiefs, both positive and negative. As a Chiefs fan sympathizer, I felt that the Chiefs organization needed to move on from Carl Peterson. I was also mortified when rumors started flying shortly after that, that he may become involved with the Dolphins organization. So, to say that I am a fan of Carl Peterson, couldn't be further from the truth.
With that being said, I've been pondering the idea, given the fact that we were spurned by Caserio, that Ross appoint Carl as an interim GM through the 2014 season and only through the 2014 season. I only say this because I think that Ross is in an unrecoverable tail spin at this point and I don't see any other positive outcomes given the current list of candidates. This is not to say that some of the other candidates aren't qualified.
What Carl would bring is instant credibility to the position. I believe he would have the respect of Philbin, Aponte and Gaine, as well as the rest of the scouting department. This also allows one more year to evaluate Philbin and his coaching staff and see whether Tannehill develops further under the tutelage of Lazor.
Under this scenario, if we tank in 2014, we blow the thing up, hire a solid GM and build the organization from the top down with no personnel considered untouchable.
If the 2014 campaign is successful, then I think the GM position may be a little more intriguing and we may get a more solid group of prospective candidates. In this case, I still think that Ross needs to soften his stance on the reporting structure and allow the new GM to determine the organizational chart in the front office. The one road bump we would have in this scenario is finding a GM that finds Philbin to be a solid long term head coach, which I believe our 2014 success or failure may give us the answer.
The major pit fall to this entire theory would be another season of mediocrity. If I was Ross, I would set the over/under at 11 wins. Anything less would be considered failure and would trigger the bomb that blows up the entire structure. He can no longer reward minor progress.
