The new Dolphins coach who was San Diego's offensive coordinator is having a difficult time filling the same position on his staff.

Cam Cameron was snubbed by a second candidate for the team's coordinator/quarterbacks coach jobs when Pete Carmichael Jr. removed himself from consideration, a source said Saturday. Carmichael has opted to remain as New Orleans' quarterbacks coach.

Cincinnati quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese also recently shunned Cameron's overtures by declining to interview for the positions. A source said Zampese's interest in what is billed as a coordinator's role was tempered by Cameron's intention to call the offensive plays in games.

Lots of guys want to call their own plays, because it gives them a better reputation in the league, makes them look more experienced when up for a head coaching job, and puts them in a position to have success sooner.

Dont worry though we will find our man.

I agree, this is not a very important position to fill. The OC is basically going to be Cameron anyways. The D-Line and quarterback coach is the most important positions we need to fill yet.

If Cam said he is going to be the playcaller, then, well, we already have our OC. Plus, add in the QB situation, and I doubt many people are chomping at the bits to be the "OC".
I think the offense is going to be in good hands with Cam though.

Yeah Cam is the OC basically. The man we hire will be mostly to help coach the offense and help gameplan as well as be the QB coach. Most likely anyway.

Offensive minded OCs have often had a very hard time becoming great head coaches. More importantly, they have mostly failed to improve the offense on their new teams. The fact that so many potential OCs have refused to become the Miami OC is cause for alarm. Calling plays or not, going from QB coach to OC should be considered a step up. When coaches reject this offer, it makes me concerned about Cameron's reputation around the league.

I hope we get a credible guy, but at this point he will be Cameron's 3rd choice. Not exactly cause for optimism.

Keeping Mularkey could be one of the reasons these guys are staying away.

He called the plays last year and Cam is going to call them this year.Whoever comes in is going to feel like a bump in the log.

Mularkey may get his job back by default.

Whether Cameron is calling the plays or not, OC is a VERY important position to fill. There is a LOT more to being an offensive coordinator than just calling the plays.

I had a feeling this would become a problem when it came to filling the OC position. I see both sides of this: Cameron wants to be in charge of the plays in the game because he wants to be sure, from his perspective, that it's done right. But at the same time, head coaches are responsible for the entire team - not just one side of the ball. He needs to put confidence into his coordinators while he is concerned game planning and preparation and such - while still having some input on the plays that are being called in the game.

let mularkey fill the role, besides we have until sept until we play a game

They can hire me. I don't mind Cam calling the plays. I'll take that paycheck any day! haha

Offensive minded OC's? Are there any other kind? :D
