Mare seems to be back to his old self this season hitting 13 out of 14 so far and is still booming them into the endzone on limited chances. 25 percent of his kickoffs are touchbacks. Carpenter has been 8 of 10 which is pretty good but very anemic on kickoffs with only 6 percent touchbacks which is not an improvement over Feeley who had 12 percent. I wanted us to get a younger guy at some point but Carpenter has been less than stellar on kickoffs which was supposedly the reason we let Feeley go. I personally hope we look for an upgrade in the offseason because a touchback really helps keep teams in bad starting position. Mare had a horrible year last year mainly due to a groin injury. Not knocking on a young kicker but that is not a good TB number at all and we are still suffering in the special teams department.

Touchbacks are important no doubt, but if Carpenter is going to kick 80% all year I'm fine if he can't boom them out of the endzone.

Mare stunk it up his last few years and he was HORRIBLE in NOLA...I was in NOLA working the FEMA camps, and, I had the misfortune to watch him shanking FGs all year. Kickers are kickers are kickers. We overpaid him drasticly on his last contract.

Also, the one of the two he missed was not all his fault. Can't fault him for having a 6-8, 366 pound player rip apart your line and block the kick.

Mare was nursing a groin injury most of last year. This is not a good thing for a kicker at all. Thats the only reason he was that bad in NO. He had a bad year on the prior year kicking Fg's but he was still a leader in Tb's. He was 72 percent that year. I dont think we overpaid for mare since we paid basically the same money to Feeley and cut him the next season after having one of the best FG seasons in dolphin history. Mare is kicking 93 percent this season. Carpenter is one of the main reasons we have one of the worst kickoff coverage teams in the NFL.

Mare was pretty bad in his last year here. He was equally as bad the following year with the Saints. Whatever he's doing in Seattle that's working for him, good for him. However, I'm happy with Dan Carpenter.

He was shanking kicks regularly prior to his groin injury. The locals I worked with were contemplating feeding him to the gators.

Are you crazy it was one of the few trades made last year that turned out good. Too bad becasue I liked Mare and hated to see him go at the time.

Im not a Carpenter fan at all. He has been solid on field goals much like Feeley was but he is even worse on kickoffs than Feeley. He ranks near the bottom of touchbacks with only 2 at a six percent clip and and only three fulltime kickers have worst average returns against them. I am always for a guy that is a good allaround kicker and we have still yet to find him.

If you guys are complaining about the kicker not driving it into the endzone every kickoff, you need to get your priorities checked.

field position is a key in any game of football and our kicker and kicking unit continually give our opponents some of the best field position in the league. We are not talking about every kickoff he does it 6 percent of the time and has one of the most generous return yardage in the league.

i heard mare was going out alot.i think it got to him, girls -clubs -beach,take your pick.the coachs knew what was up.he might have gotten in shape this year.after seeing it all slip away, being hurt and all.good for him for turning it around.

I've noticed the short kickoffs too. Wasn't he booming them for touchbacks during exhibition, and wasn't THAT the main reason the FO decided to shoot craps with a raw, untested rookie than go with cool as ice Feeley? On the basis of his most recent bodies of work, there'd be no reason to reconsider Mare; however, on an apples to apples comparison, I've gotta ask myself, although granted a big mouth, for those pressurized, game-on-the-line FGs, would we not have been better off retaining JF???
