The Skinny: Give general manager Mike Tannenbaum credit for trying to improve his team. But trading for two Chip Kelly moves gone bad from the Eagles in Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonsois risky. Defensive end Mario Williams could be a steal if he decides he wants to play hard. Safety Isa Abdul-Quddus is a solid signing who will be a nice complement to Rashad Jones. If the Broncos don't match the offer to running back C.J. Anderson, that would be five starters out of this class. Not bad, but time will tell.
B-: They took on some risk with the Eagles contracts. But they feel like they've added good players to their defense.

[h=2]Buffalo Bills [/h]
The Skinny: They did the smart thing and made sure to keep the left side of their offensive line in tackle Cordy Glenn and guard Richie Incognito. They had some cap issues, so they did suffer a few losses like Mario Williams (released), corner Leodis McKelvin (released) and linebacker Nigel Bradham.
B: Keeping your own is important and they kept the players they wanted to keep.

[h=2]New York Jets [/h]
The Skinny: The biggest uncertainty is what they plan to do with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. So far, there is no deal. But it's still possible. They did put the franchise tag on defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, which was a wise move. They brought in running backs Matt Forte and Khiry Robinson to help offset the loss of Chris Ivory. They also re-signed Bilal Powell. They made a push for pass rusher Olivier Vernon, but that will have to be addressed in the draft. Losing Damon Harrison on the nose will hurt.
C+: Keeping Wilkerson was smart, but the quarterback uncertainty drives down the grade for now.

[h=2]New England Patriots [/h]
The Skinny: The Patriots are another team that usually waits until the big-ticket items are gone, and then they jump into the mix. The only major signing so far was tendering an offer to Bills restricted free-agent receiver Chris Hogan. That's it. They also added outside linebacker Roman Humber from the Saints.
C: As usual, they draft and develop. The odd thing is the offer sheet to Hogan. Why not a deep threat?

How is Quddus, another SS who plays in the box, a compliment to Jones? :idk:

Quddus is known for his coverage which is what a free safety does. Having him be good at playing the run is just a bonus. He played free safety with the saints as a reserve as well.

Quite a positive grade for a Bills team that did nothing but make their defense worse.

But hey, Rob Ryan is in there...soooooooooo yeah.

Quddus was used in the box to cover tight, flexed and slot receivers which is exactly what a SS does. He may have speed, but a raw measurable is not enough as needing range is an entirely different skillset (Think Ed Reed). Free Safeties also requires the ability to read the QB, route combinations, and the knowledge to read & diagnose the play. Something Quddus has not displayed having played SS with little to no experience at FS.

Every Lions fan I've talked to is pretty adamant that Quddus is a SS. I hate miscast safety pairings.

It's not just a perception. I watched watch him in every single game he's played with them and would invite anyone else to do the same. Quddus was the Lions starting Strong safety. Well for 12 out of the past 32 games at least and not until after the original starter was injured.

In many ways, the prior offseason champs lessons will help us focus on three things:
the draft
young, system fit free agents
developing internal talent.

That's the key to longevity, free agency is utilized to fill the last few holes, not to fill all holes because you can't draft.

They didn't see the thread about the method to the madness of free agency? Seriously, how can we rate free agency in week 2? I also believe this is a boom or bust group. Either our FO looks great for taking chances or stupid. I think it will be the latter but I'll wait. Williams could be good. Not sure why everyone thinks Maxwell and Kiko are definite upgrades.

We play safeties as if they were both FS/SS so not too concerned with Q coming in with a similar skill set. BTW, Jones deep isn't horrible by any means, this just allows us to be more versatile in our coverage schemes.
