Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins checked off most of their areas of concern with a very logical draft but I don't know the club received great value at any of their selections, starting with Jawuan James at No. 19 overall. WR Jarvis Landry and TE Arthur Lynch are solid, pro-ready players but neither has the athleticism to ever likely more than complementary players in the NFL. Frankly, I'm more intrigued by the upside of the relative "small-schoolers" in Billy Turner, Walt Aikens and Jordan Tripp. James will start right away and Turner will develop into a starter relatively soon, as well, filling huge gaps in Miami's offensive line but are the Dolphins closer to overtaking the Patriots with this draft? Grade: C+

I guess a C+ is not too bad, about where I would have had them. No one really knows how good or bad it really was, not until two or three years down the road..

If he's more interested in our small school guys but doesnt know jack about them then I dont care what he grades....let alone grades themselves. they dont mean diddly poo.

does buffalo's grade go from A to C because Darius is a big pot smoker? It should IMO. this is why grades are stupid. NE gets a B for what? A 290 LB DT with two ACL's?

its BS.

Gotta love the spew of Landry not being athletic enough. :crazy:

For "expert" analysis they only honor Landry's hamstring hampered 4.7 combine 40.

This draft would make us able to compete with NE because the O-line would be fixed. The pieces on offense are already there if we can just protect the QB and create holes for the RBs. It's not like we needed a bunch of Pro Bowlers right away from this draft to make us competitive. We were 8-8 last year with close losses.

We beat New England with McKinnie and Clabo last year, we can do it with Albert and James this year

Agree tannehil might have had 30 touchdowns with this revamped o line. You dont take the BPA when you have huge holes on the offensive line and your QB is on his back more than debbie does dallas.

landry pulled a calf at the combine...i think it was more about running a slow time honestly in the 40 and damage control...if there's one concern there it's lack of separation on some stuff...he catches a lot of closely contested balls...and at 5 ft 11 1/2 the lack of separation is gonna be exasperated

i love the player huge hands catches the ball with ease but it's a legit gripe i'd say...

i think turner over the long haul may be a better pro than jawaun james...all i know is we seriously upgraded the foot and lateral short area quickness with these two picks and with turner we seriously upgraded the move athlete

I agree with the grade because I don't believe Hickey did enough to address our true shortcomings.
1. It was clear that there was an offer to trade down from #19 that he could have taken. In all probability, we could have traded down and still netted James. Even if James was gone, we would have still been in range for Bitonio or Mewhort later. That is unless the Dolphin's scouts thought James was the only viable RT in the class. If that's the case, I question our scouting.
2. Our run defense was horrible because one our WLB is terrible, and our MLB should probably be playing WLB. We whiffed in FA on a MLB. Was there a MLB prospect in this draft? Why didn't we draft one? Yes, Mosley and Shazier were gone, but did we not like Borland at all?
3. How do you not draft a RB when you know that none of the 3 on the roster are good in short yardage situations? Shouldn't you be developing a RB to at least get Thomas' salary off your books?
4. No FS prospect. We're ok with Jimmy Wilson and Don Jones as the primary backups? Really?
5. I like Billy Turner as a OG and possible swing tackle. But there were actual OG prospects out there that fit our scheme, and we passed them by because we had traded down so much.

I don't know, depends what you mean with your grades. I'm English and perhaps we have a different value on our grades but this is the scale I've always gone with:

A = Excellent
B = Very good
C = Good/Acceptable
D = Below Average
E = Poor
F = Awful

Now grading the draft C+ according to my scale here, says that this was an above average draft. I don't agree with that personally, and Rang is saying we didn't hit on anything really, so that to me makes no sense, and what he really should have given us based on his write up was a D- possibly even an E.

American scales may be different so feel free to educate me on interpretation here.

**** I would not sleep well tonight because Bob Rang gave us a C.

Exactly. People think because we didn't get a lot of playmakers this draft, our team doesn't have playmakers. Reality check, we have a lot of guys already who make plays, but couldn't because of offensive line woes since Tannehill can't get the ball out in time. With that potentially fixed, watch out.

Pretty much the same on the American grading scale, C was always considered average

We hope. A lot of people said similar last year and NE won the division easily. Every year people predict we're going to overtake NE and every year NE goes to the playoffs while our guys go home.

A lot? Give me a list of all these play-makers. Outside of Wallace and an occasional flash from Clay who may develop into one, I don't see anyone on our offense I'd call a play-maker.

We usually skip the E grade C in my book is considered OK not good nor bad. This is when you optionally add a + or -
I gave the fins B- not the shiniest picks though focused on the biggest issues with keeping Tannehill upright and looking down the field.
Tanne should have at least another second or 2 to find targets. You got to believe the running game would improve with Landry, Lynch.
Juwan is certainly an upgrade and he could end up being the third best lineman in pass protection the dolphins have.
Pouncey might not have to face as many double teams. Turner seems like a fighter. This draft could end up being better than any of the Ireland drafts.
Did Ireland ever produce a b- draft?
