The Bills signed him to the ridiculous contract. I love Clay, and he deserves to get paid, but not that much. Did you know his contract makes him the FOURTH highest paid TE in the league? Behind only Gronk, Graham, and Davis? The gurantee's for his deal are over 50% over the life of the contract.

Jeff Ireland would have matched that in a heartbeat. He would have paid Clay that money, and he would forver have had to carry the stigma and pressure of always being a top 4 - top 3 TE at all times. He would never have lived up to his contract, precious cap room would be eaten up, and we would all negatively view Clay for never living up to this deal. This new regime recognizes Clay is never going to be the best TE in the league. He is very good, often great, player. But he does not have the body nor talent to get himself to Gronk level. It's refreshing to see us not throw dollars at whoever just for the sake of paying them to me a middle of the road player (i.e. Hartline, Ellerbe, Wheeler).

I wanted to keep Clay, but on our terms, not on that insane deal the Bills signed him too. This Tannebaum/Hickey dynamic seems almost logical for right now.

Well said sir! I agree, he was good but not that good. Ireland would have matched and the organization, Clay, and the fan base would have crumbled under the pressure of that contract. Thank you for your input OP.

Agree 100%. The brain trust is much smarter than it was under Ireland and some of the clowns before him. Heck, these guys are at least more relevant in terms of their thinking than the allmighty Parcells was when he was here.

Are my eyes teasing me or did you just call Philip Wheeler "a middle of the road player"? lol

I was being generous. He's probably that road kill you find IN the middle of the road...

I love clay and am upset we didn't extend him last year. With that said I'm still pissed we gave away vontae

I'm guessing Rex Ryan had more to do with the Jets collapse then he lets on. He's a great coach, but he is very passionate and sometimes it overpowers his common sense. Rex is forever regretting his actions.

I like Clay. His contract isn't a good one though and that's for Buffalo to worry about going forward.

In the end, the franchise put a lot of strain and cap commitment on the Buffalo Bills. I will miss Clay, but while Buffalo was fumbling with a contract offer we could not match, our front office was at work. We have Cameron and two young TE's going forward. I would have welcomed Clay back, but for the cost, not a chance. Factor in the strain we forced Buffalo in to, and I am happy with the outcome.

I say job well done by our front office.

Yep...the Bills fan who was on FH for days defending the money they paid him needs a reality check

Well put, OP.

Clay will never live up to that money, not with Cassel, EJ Manuel, and Tyrod Taylor throwing the ball.
I saw another line from WalterFootball that rung true as well:

"Something else that needs to be considered is Clay's durability. He has played just one full season in his 4-year career, so I'm not sure why the Bills think it's a great idea to guarantee him so much money."

I don't disagree but think if it were financially viable (for Miami) should have put a 3rd tender on him this yr.

I could be wrong about this but I think you can do that only if Clay was a restricted free agent, and Clay was unrestricted.
